We had exactly one WR on scholarship when Mullen got here. That is ONE! We needed a running QB and Russell is not that. Mullen has been recruiting WR's ever since and has built some depth even if they are not NFL quality.

Relf held him off because he could run and that is all we could do at the time.

This is what I like so much about Mullen, he adapts his offense to the talent which is more important for us than most.

This. Everything I've always read from "insiders" was Mal was going to hire him but he just completely bombed his interview. Supposedly he even admitted to bombing it, that is until Jesse got a hold of him.
