Mark Fox had to make yearly rounds to chapter to try and hype up Greek life for the basketball season. Such an awkward speaker

I never attended a single basketball game while I was in school. None of my friends every really wanted to go... We'd just hang out in the house, watch the game on TV, and keep drinking if it was a weekend game.

This was fairly similar to Alabama. Greek students watched basketball and wanted the team to do well, but there was a turf war of greeks v independents. Independents got to run the Coleman Coliseum student section without greek interference and greeks got to run Bryant Denny's student section without independent interference. It was an unspoken rule that both sides seemed ok with. There was never much of an attempt made at getting greeks to the basketball games, probably out of fear that it would alienate the more loyal support basketball had with the independent students and clubs.

I know when I was in school at Alabama over a decade ago, basketball games were somewhat shunned by the fraternity and sorority crowd. And that was with top 15 type teams under Gottfried. It wasn't so much that greek students didn't like basketball. It was more of a cultural thing. The fraternities were used to the block seating and all weekend festivities associated with football games and basketball games were dominated by the independent students who took all of the good seats by getting there early and joining Mark's Madness, etc. Greek students just are not going to paint their bodies or wear crazy outfits to basketball games. I would assume that same type of culture exists at most SEC schools besides Kentucky.

I dunno about that, but fraternities and sororities definitely shunned the whole Mark's Madness thing. The student section was always packed back then, with Marks Madness in their seats and the rest of the students (including a lot of fraternity folks) above them and in the corner. I went to a million basketball games in college with my fraternity friends and my now wife and her sorority friends and there were tons of fraternity/sorority folks there. But there certainly wasn't fighting to get down into the Marks Madness section. There was absolutely fighting and finagling to save seats in the rest of the student section for SEC games, though. As a guy who seemed to always be there 30 minutes early I generally got all the calls to "save us some seats" from multiple groups who were getting there right at tip.

But they did not paint their bodies or wear crazy stuff to games, no, and a lot of them just wore normal clothes and not Alabama t-shirts and stuff.

Replay of auburn @ mizzou is on at the place I’m eating. Mizzou students look so nerdy, actually the whole crowd. Just a bunch of nerdy honkys. Why is college basketball this way?

Society have been set back because parents haven't been communicating with their kids like the old days. Time sure have changed.

That's more or less the same for UGA.

UGA even divides the greeks from the independents at football games. The Greek section is in the 300 level, above the main student section that you see on TV. The main student sections (near the enclosed end zone and in the West end zone) are primarily for independent and club students, with a sprinkle of greek life. Those areas are first come first served so the greeks don't really want to leave their tailgates early to get those seats.

The 300 level is block seating and imo offers a better view of the field. It's more like an all 22 film angle and allows you to see the flow/game better.

You're not alive until you watch a group of fraternity dudes argue about in-game play calling a mile away from the sideline

It's what I imagine Socrates and his students looking like

I was about to say "to go with our croakies and Costas" but I'm pretty sure all the cool kids have moved past the mid-2000s swag of Costas/North Face/New Balance/Columbia PFG.

Most of that stuff was still around, a little bit, from 2014-2018.

Long live the era of obscure jerseys.

The only thing that tops that is listening to a scattered group of cranky old dudes complaining non-stop about balls and strikes while sitting down the right field line

Oh gawd I have a group of old guys who have season tickets behind ours at Braves games. They scream about balls and strikes every fvckin hitter for 81 games from the 400 level.

"THAT PITCH WAS UP" as we LITERALLY have no perception of elevation while looking straight down on home plate.

They actually are, you’re just a nerd. I graduated a few years ago and basketball student sections are filled with the nerdiest kids every school has to offer. It’s so weird
