I don't know, but I do know that the 1995 Nebraska team was the greatest team in the history of college football.

Still, wouldn't call them the best ever. Fine club, though.

1961 Alabama Crimson Tide football team.
Undefeated, 11-0 record
Outscored opponents by an incredible 297 - 25
Led by All-SEC and Heisman Trophy finalist (finished 5th),
QB, Pat Trammell; Center/Linbacker Lee Roy Jordan (All-SEC in 61; All-American in '63); and, Offensive Lineman, Billy Neighbors (All-American). Jordan, and Neighbors were later selected for the College Football Hall of Fame and had outstanding professional careers as well.
Beat Arkansas 10-3 in the Sugar Bowl to win the National Championship
It is well recognized that the 1961 Alabama Crimson Tide football team was the best defensive team in college football history. Not only did the '61 Tide outscore opponents 297-25; they shut out six teams and never allowed more than 7 points in any game.

Good thing for them the other SEC co-champion, LSU wasn't on the yearly schedule yet.

An LSU fan without the three 62-0 wins over Tulane memorized.

In 1957, AU shut out 6 teams and did not allow more than 7 points in any game either.

1945 Alabama. Closest margin of victory was a 28-14 victory over Georgia. They averaged 43 points a game in an age where offenses just didn't put up that many points. The defense was also amazing, giving up less than 90 total points on the year. They finished 10-0 and blew the breaks off of USC in the Rose Bowl. '45 Alabama would have been national champs that year if not for an Army team finishing undefeated in the year World War II ended.

1957 Auburn was also on probation and couldn't go to a bowl. If the rules of today had been in place back then, the AP wouldn't have voted you national champions that year.

I don't know. I think Army during WWII had a special place for drafted big guys. I've read that story somewhere anyways.

57 Auburn didn't win their bowl game though.

Call Mal and have someone take down that stupid 1941 NC Flag and replace it with 1945. They were indeed tremendous and did win some "41ish" titles.

So was 2009 Bama.

Also of note, AU did not lose a game from 11/10/1956 until 09/26/1959. Only 1 team scored more than once on AU during that time as well, Ole Miss.

In terms of which team beats every other team? 2011 Alabama and 2011 LSU. Both were head and shoulders above any team this generation.
No. 2004 AU or 2008 UF were capable of beating either.

This being before the SEC! SEC! SEC! mantra and in the midst of Spurrier beat downs...I am forever a Tommy Frazier fan.
