Agreed.

It's a shame every team doesn't have an intense rivalry... There are few things that match the electricity and atmosphere of games like the Iron Bowl or Texas/OU. It's one of the things that makes college football, IMO.

I agree. I think rivalries in college sports are one of the coolest things about college sports. You don't see it really in the pros (red sox Yankees is nowhere near the intensity of bama auburn).

It'd be cool to have a real rival. Tulane was the strongest one for a while but then they left the SEC and now they should just be relegated to I-AA.

But we still get fired up over every game regardless

Ole miss is in no way our rival. For older people maybe they consider it somewhat a rivalry. But the current students like myself and my generation we couldn't give a crap about ole miss. We really don't have one. Auburn is maybe the closest thing now considering the recent history between us, but I'm sure they put more emphasis on bama than us so it's not a true rivalry either.

Uh, ok. So this is why YOUR (LSU) student government leaders called the Ole Miss student government a few years ago with the idea of naming the Ole Miss-LSU football game, hence the Magnolia Bowl? Y'all just called a random
school for the hell of it?

Chill out. I wasn't trying to flame Ole Miss. I respect the history our schools have and recognize it once was a rivalry. WAS.

It isn't anymore. The student government didn't come up with that idea themselves. It was probably some moron with a CC degree in marketing working for our pathetic marketing department who decided we need to give every freaking game we play a title. Like the "Battle for the Golden Boot" against Arkansas

I promise, we don't care about you. Sorry

Trust me my feelings aren't hurt.
But your student government did come up with the idea, and if you search the archives of The Reville (sp?) you will see that is the case.
It's really a good thing they did, as we are now undefeated in the Magnolia Bowl.

I wasn't questioning who came up with the idea to give the game a name. The student government operates under a larger bureaucracy though. They didn't come up with it themselves. Even if they had, their actions do not reflect the feelings of the rest of us. Trust me, it was some idiot in marketing who gave them the idea. Our marketing department is run by monkeys.

It just didn't work out, historically.

Back in the day, when the southern states were just starting state universities, most created a liberal arts college and a tech or ag college.

For example, Alabama is liberal arts, Auburn was ag. Ole Miss was liberal arts, Miss State was ag. Georgia was liberal arts, Georgia Tech was, well, Tech.

The exception to this, in the deep south anyways, was Louisiana, because we already had a very good private liberal arts university (Tulane) and didn't see the need to start a public one (they received public money, anyways). LSU was and still is the ag and tech school.

So the rivalry was LSU - Tulane. It is not our fault that Tulane sucks now. Nothing can be done about it. The screwed themselves long ago by dropping out of the SEC (true story).

Strangely, most Tulane fans I know will hate LSU until LSU is in a big game, and then they get on board with the whole "root for Louisiana" thing.

LSU fans, for the most part, don't give a shite about Tulane (except maybe, sometimes, in baseball....sometimes).

You're wrong.

Tulane IS the University of Louisiana, and carries that name in its official title:

quote:

Tulane University (officially The Tulane University of Louisiana or simply TU)

The university was founded as the Medical College of Louisiana[3] in 1834 partly as a response to the fears of smallpox, yellow fever and cholera in America.[6] The university became only the second medical school in the South, and the 15th in the United States at the time. In 1847, the state legislature established the school as the The University of Louisiana,[3] a public university, and the law department was added to the university. Subsequently, in 1851, the university established its first academic department. With the creation of the new University of Louisiana, the first president chosen for the new university was Francis Lister Hawks, an Episcopalian bishop and prominent citizen of New Orleans at the time.

The university was closed from 1861 to 1865 during the American Civil War. After reopening, it went through a period of financial challenges because of an extended agricultural depression in the South which affected the nation's economy. Paul Tulane, owner of a prospering dry good and clothing business, donated extensive real estate within New Orleans for the support of education. This donation led to the establishment of a Tulane Educational Fund (TEF), whose board of administrators sought to support the University of Louisiana instead of establishing a new university. In response, through the influence of former Civil War general Randall Lee Gibson, the Louisiana state legislature transferred control of the University of Louisiana to the administrators of the TEF in 1884.[3] This act created the contemporary Tulane University of Louisiana.[7] The university became privatized, and is the only American university to be converted from a state public institution to a private one.[8]

And vice versa.... Your obvious bias against br doesn't make you're opinion for everyone. I love br and new orleans one in the same. But assholes are everywhere... Including the people who stereotype a minority with an entire population

It must really suck not having a traditional rival then. So, your rival is just whomever is good that year? lol For myself, I cannot imagine going through a football season without the State and LSU games.

It doesn't diminish in any way how passionate we are about our football. So no it doesn't suck. Winning championships is more important than winning Egg Bowls or whatever made up "bowl" name someone wants to call a game.

I enjoy playing everyone in the SEC. Every game means something when you're competing for national championships. I wouldn't expect you to understand that.

You wouldnt miss these games even if they didnt have stupid arse names. As a fan I really look forward to Bama, Florida, and Auburn and all the games. We just dont have names of those games. The Magnolia Bowl and the Battle for the boot arent really rivalry games for the fans just because of a name. Im looking forward to all games just about the same this year. But honestly Bama and Florida are going to get more attention and hype.

It does. The only thing that consoles us are those crystal footballs we've won.

I could care less if the games are named or not.
I was referring to the poster who said LSU didn't have any rivals. For me, State and LSU will always be our rivals, no matter the record.
Rivalries like these make college football a lot more fun

How old are you, seriously? I've probably been to more OM-LSU games than years you've been alive. Competing for national championships? You have to be extremely young or you don't have a very good memory. Y'all sucked for most of the 90's and I don't think you need to be worrying about any more championships with the coach you have right now. You need to start worrying about beating us (your non existent rival) first.

Lsu ole miss is not a rivalry no matter how badly you want us to care about you. You may hate us the way we hate Bama or Florida, but we do not feel sufficiently threatened by you in order to call you our rival. Call it a rivalry all you, but nobody in baton rouge does.

We hate Bama, they don't really hate us back. It's not a rivalry. And I don't really care. You are putting too much thought into this. Your rival is Mississippi state. Have your egg bowl, enjoy it, that's your rivalry game. We aren't.

Well I know a LOT of LSU alums and they would disagree with you. So you can believe in your head whatever you want I guess.
Go ahead and worry about Bama (or Saban, really). I'm sure they care. lol
Here's to Ole Miss making it three in a row this season.

I'm 21 and yeah I realize we sucked in the 90s, but if you seriously think we are not still in a position to compete for SEC championships or national championships, you're delusional no matter how old you are. We're not even three calendar years removed from winning our last title (with the coach we have right now). If I want to hear people bash miles I can go to the tiger rant how many SEC championships or national titles does your boy nutt have?

As far as what other LSU fans think of this "rivalry" matter, I already have said multiple times that OLDER LSU fans will probably agree with you, however the younger generation does not. How are you going to continue to try and refute the opinion of a collective group of which you are not a member? Don't try and tell me what current students at LSU do or don't think. I am telling you we do not perceive you as a rival. It's very simple. Older LSU people? Maybe. Current students? No. You can't tell me how we do or do not perceive you.

Here's to you losing the egg bowl, your real rivalry game, yet again this year. Hey do y'all have a banner hanging for your "magnolia bowl championship" yet? Maybe up next to your "2003 sec west co-champions banner"?
