This decision, like most religious ones, is made by some people's families before they are born.
Also, like with other religious matters, it doesn't always "take".

What about kids who grow up Bama fans but decide to become farmers and therefore attend Auburn? Should they have to switch to being Auburn fans?

Dude,
.................
How about: wherever you WANT to be. I'm a Longhorn alumnus but an LSU Tiger the last 17 years.

Two of the roommates I had while at Auburn were Bama fans. They chose Auburn for engineering and MIS, not farming. One of them came back after Christmas with a framed "Victory on the Plains" poster (Sophomore year). At first, they would cheer for Auburn except for the Iron Bowl. They were both full Auburn fans by the time they graduated. I actually finished school at Bama, but remained an Auburn fan. Just depends on the situation, I guess.

Grew up a Carolina fan... granddad and dad both went there. It was only natural that I pulled for them and went to school there. I briefly considered going to Wofford, but knew that I would spend most of my weekends in the fall driving back and forth to Columbia for the football games, so I reconsidered.

This would become problematic for the vast majority of bama fans!

It is always funny how some people think which team you should cheer for.
I am a MS State grad but have always and will always be an Alabama fan. That doesn't mean that I don't pull for MSU because I do. I just pull for Alabama more.

It's a personal choice and there isn't any right answer here.
Growing up in AL I knew some Bama fans who went to AU and vice versa. Most of them remained fans of the team they were raised cheering for while a few flipped sides. There are a multitude of reasons why someone might go to a particular school (scholarship, costs, majors, georgraphic proximity, family, etc. etc.) instead of the school they were raised with. I'll never say someone can't be a fan of a certain team or should pull for xyz team because they went to undergrad at a certain school.

Well, maybe if Auburn wasn't Bama's little brother they would have more sidewalk fans.
