I have never seen any evidence that miss meek decided to name it that because of the plantation owners wife.
I was curious about this; the naming contest sounds like a revisionist story. I'm not trying to flame, just curious.

I have no clue where it came from...

Named after Alabama's field goal kicker.

Big Daddy would not have put up with this poster's mendacity.

Shouldn't the university change to Big Momma Blackbears?
First they need to get "Rebels" off their field.
Seriously OM fans, why is that still on the field?

Did anyone get input from the slaves on this one?

That doesn't explain why Rebels is still on the field when y'all are now the black bears. Leave Spirit out of this

We just had to get rid of the on the field mascot, the colonel. We weren't the OM Colonels, we were and still are the rebels, just with a different on the field mascot. And auburn fans calling another school out for several "mascots" is pretty funny...

I'm not calling any school out on mascots. I simply asked a question. I though OM was now the "Ole Miss Black Bears", I thought Rebels and the Colonel were gone. Sorry for not keeping up
Auburn has one mascot: Aubie (the Tiger). I'm sorry if you don't understand the difference between a war cry (War Eagle--much like Roll Tide or that damn pig call Arky does) and a mascot (Tiger-Aubie).

Yeah but, Roll Tide refers to the Crimson Tide, which is bamas mascot. Woo Pig Soiee refers to a pig, which is a razorback, which is their mascot.
War Eagle is a battle cry, sure, but then you fly an eagle onto the field (sometimes into windows) and thus, THAT becomes a mascot.
See how it can be confusing?

War Eagle Explanation
We fly eagles onto the field bc (1) War Eagle is our battle cry and (2) Auburn is home to the Southeastern Raptor Center.

One of the early nicknames for LSU was Ole Lou.
