Auburn needs to ride that train as long as possible. Replacing a good coordinator doesn't always work out as well as most hope. Look at FSU post Richt.

PJ am I reading that you think it doesnt matter who the OC is as long as he's decent AU is looking at 8/9 win seasons in 2011 and 2012 and that 2013/14 is about the time AU can start making contender status? Not trying to put words in your mouth just wondering what year AU fans think is best to start a new OC 2011, or 2012?

I trhink if Gus stays for the 2011 season and then leaves, AU will be ok. I think Gus knows the strengths/weaknesses of the offensive team that will be returning in 2011 and can gameplan around them to make the team seviceable. If the defense can continue to improve on depth and play reasonably well, I think an offensive output similar to and maybe just slightly better than 2009 can win 8 or 9 games regular season.
Also, with him being on the plains for another year, and coming off the success of this season (esp with a win over Oregon) the recruits will come.
Bring in a new OC after the 2011 season, one that runs something similar to what Gus does and that can take advantage of the players already on campus, and give him the spring of 2012 to install his system and I think there will be some bumps, but as I said the 2012 schedule is somewhat favorable.
2013 you will see this year's true froshes in their senior season (Dyer, Reed, etc.) and they should be successful. Then you would have 2014 being Fraziers redshirt (I did say shirt this time right) junior year and hopefully the RS Jr/true senior year for guys that come in on NSD 2011 along with recruits from 2012 on and things will hopefully be ok.
I am not saying AU will be like USCw where they are expected to pay for the BCS titleevery season, but if a good OC is brought in after the 2011 season to replace Gus, I can see AU being like they were for much of TT's time there - a threat to win the SEC west every season and a chance at the big game every few years.

Doesnt it make sense to start off a new QB with a new OC. Is it going to be a step back to put the new QB next year under Malzahn for 1 season then start him off with a new guy the next?
It would be if you were going to have a totally different offense, but if you are going to run the same one generally speaking it would be a lot better having the originator of said offense schooling the QB.
I don't think Chizik would fall to far from Gus's type of O and in fact would probably install someone who has been on Chizik's hip. Just a theory of mine is all. I could be completely wrong when it comes to the wacky world of college football.

I will answer the question for you. Auburn bought themselves a year to put a plan in place because they didn't think Malzahn would get a gig this year. This was a bad year for Malzahn to leave becaus enter jobs were either big or small. I think he wants a solid program he can win at that will take a shot on him. My biggest fear was for Petrino to get Florida. Arkansas would have ponied unto lock down the state and taken Malzahn.
I think Malzahn will leave next year to a mid level job in the class of a Colorado level, once great and just down. But in Auburn's standpoint, they will have someone lined up to take his place or a short list put together.

So your saying that it's best for Auburn if Mahlzan leaves after 2011 rather than start fresh next year? You discusssed why Malzahn stays in term of whats best for him (not the op's question)but what is going to be a smoother transition for Auburn? Are you saying it doesnt matter because AU will have a plan in place? If so thats kinda blind faith isnt it?
