Coaching at Florida he should be in the Final Four or Elite 8 every year. He got lucky with the “04s” and has been poor since.
Based on what exactly? All of our Final Four appearances before Donovan?
His X's and O's have actually gotten pretty good, he has coached some absolutely brilliant games in the tournament. We may have been in back to back NIT's but that is after a massive defection of talent to the NBA, and he still coached the team to 25 wins each of the past 2 seasons.
I never understand when someone says a coach got lucky because of so-and-so. You do realize his job is to evaluate talent and recruit them to play for his school?

So how could he be left in such a bad place after the ‘04s left?

He recruited the #1 class after they left, but has since seen Speights and Calathes leave early, plus a number of transfers. Its not like recruiting hasn't been there, just unexpected players leaving.

Adam Allen: No. 70 overall, No. 19 SF
Jai Lucas: No. 42 overall, No. 7 PG
Alex Tyus: No. 49 overall, No. 12 PF
The Gators were content with their 2007 recruiting class after the fall signing period. Then Billy Donovan's crew won a second consecutive national championship and lost all five starters to graduation or the NBA Draft. Enter the late push for Houston guard Jai Lucas. The son of former NBA player and coach John Lucas picked the Gators over interest from Kentucky, Oklahoma State and others. His addition to a top-five class pushed Florida from fifth to No. 1.
What a dissapointment this class was.

Out of that list:
Calathes - left early to play in Greece
Jai Lucas - transferred after one year
Adam Allen - has been unable to play each of the past two seasons due to injury
So we have 2 players out of that class.
No one is saying we haven't recruited players, but we have lost a lot to transfer and the draft.
Not to mention we still won 25 games each year, it is not like we were horrible. Take a look at UNC this year.

We are a football school.
2 NIT's considering what is happening in UNC, UCONN, what happened in Syracuse, Georgetown, Arizona, UCLA- all of which are BASKETBALL schools, is not a big deal IMO. He gets 5 yrs of grace period after bringing 2 crystal balls
We lost our top 6 players, and our two best early. We have had injuries out the wazoo.
Billy D has done an outstanding job, and has 3 NC games- 2 which he won.
Billy is the best coach in the SEC period.

He’s gotten us to the dance every year, but we cannot get past the Sweet 16 to save our life. We lead Greg Oden and Ohio State by 20 at halftime of the Sweet 16 and we lose. That’s when I began to question him. After that he led our 31 win team to a Sweet 16 and has led two Top 20 teams to first or second round exits. I know the guy and he’s a good enough guy, but hanging his hat on 4 East Division titles and Sweet 16s when we need to get to the next level pisses me off. His player development outside of Chism has also been piss poor.
You sir, are a fuggin idiot. Exactly which Tennessee basketball history have you based your retarded arse comments on? You do realize this is mens basketball and not womens, right? What have we done historically? NOTHING! It's Tennessee basketball, dude. I would gladly take winning 20 games a year and making the tournament every year than taking a chance with someone else...b/c you can't win anything if you don't egt to the dance. Do you really think we're going to pull a Roy Williams, Coach K, or Billy Donovan type coach? No way. I'd say Pearl has done a good job with what he has to work with. Between all of the players that have left the program for conduct and personal reasons, to still win 20 games has been remarkable. Not to mention, the recruiting classes for the next 2 years gives him the guards he needs to actual run his style of ball.
As far as player developement...Dane Bradshaw and Jajuan Smith come to mind. Smith was a walk-on and ended up being a stud.
And since you knowthe guy (probably met him once at an autograph session), next time you see him tell him you don't care for his coaching ability. In the meantime, why don't you head back to Volnation with all the other fricktards.

quote:Huh? We're talking about Florida basketball which didn't have much history prior to Billy D. Florida fans don't expect Final Four's or elite 8s every year. We're almost there but still not at the level of UK, Kansas, Duke, etc. We're still a football first school and that will probably never change.

Billy developed the 04's. None of those guys were considered potential top 10 NBA picks.

im an erving walker fan
Me too.
I was at the movies last night (recorded our game, because I figure I watched after, since I can't take another nail biter), went to see Shutter Island.
The entire OkSt team was there to watch the movie (they are playing Texas today). They looked huge to me. Pretty nice guys, chatty on the ticket line. Promised a win today.

Well stated.
How much has Bobby Maze developed this year alone? He's a far better player than last season.
This inbred doesn't know the meaning of X&O. How many coaches in the game could restructure the entire style of play and lineup at midpoint during the season and have a 20-7 record headed into March?
The guy beat Kansas with 6 scholarship players and 2 walk-ons. Last time I checked, Kansas was still #1. They are 27 and Tennessee.
But no, he can't coach X&Os.
ABYSMAL.

FWIW we are going to be hands down the best team in the SEC next year.
1. Goins/Golden
2. Tatum/McCrae/McBee
3. Hopson/Woolridge
4. Harris/Maymon/Pearl
5. Williams/Hall
Maybe Negedu will be cleared to play. And a lot of people think we are the leader for Moses Abraham. Throw in either of them and our post depth/skill is the best Pearl has ever had. FWIW everyone on the team next year outside of goins was either a 4 or 5 star. Harris is likely a one and done. Rivals calling him best pro prospect in the SEC for next year.

Are you sure about that?
Florida's roster
(McCallum/Knight), Boyton
Walker, Shipman, Allen
Parsons, Prather (25 in the nation commit),
Tyus, Murphy, Young (McAA 5*commit), (Jack)
Macklin, Kadji
In parenthesis are likely signees. We either get Knight (one and done, super star, or McAA 5* McCallum
I think we win next year.

Just 3 months ago you were talking about how UT was the best and only good team in the SEC. Now you're getting a head start on next year's bogus statment already. BTW, that line-up doesn't look any better than this years. Yes it's solid, but to say hands down the best with your 1 & 2's being Goins and Tatum is laughable. Outside of Harris and Hopson, you have a line-up of nothing but role players. Nice try though.

Who is going to be better? Florida, Kentucky, Vandy possibly, but I doubt it. No one from the SEC west can hang, that's why they're all staying at home come March. Aand if we hadn't had suspensions and lost our best player we would be the best team in the SEC.

Florida and Vandy will be better than this year IMO. UK will lose a lot but who would have thought they would've had the players they have now last year at this time? UK will have a solid nucleus returning with another top 5 class thrown in the mix. I don't think they'll be as good as this year, but still very good. Yes the West will still suck and the top 4 teams in the East will be the same as this year. The order in how they finish is obviously still up in the air. But to say UT is hands down the best is a huge reach.
