Watch the offensive and defensive lines in this game today...
afterward, you'll have a good understanding of the term.

The teams colors from the beginning were crimson. The "Tide" portion came from a game in the 1910s in which Alabama played a game in a down pour of rain.

A powerful force of nature.
Of course being an English Lit minor, I believe the originator of the term had an Oedipus Complex and was grappling with female menestruation issues and basic feelings of male inadequacy.

In terms of marine biology, a "Red Tide" can be very intimidating.

It's a rare, mythical event that rarely takes place in Alabama anymore due to trailer-wives being constantly knocked up. Thus, they named their football team in memory of it.

came from a sportswriter saying that Alabama swept over their opponent like a "great crimson tide" - same as 'green wave.'

a group of elephants is called a 'tide'
example - a group of geese is called a 'gagle.'
thus a crimson tide is a group of red elephants.

1907, auburn game, no one was giving them (bama)a chance to win. alabama TIED the game, 6-6, and prompted the sports editor for the B-Ham news to call them the Crimson Tide.
this is not a joke.
