Kind of true, but in OT, the first two plays were designed for him, and one of them would have worked had it been executed properly.

I don't think it happened either, but I think you are discounting the possibility that Saban did give him a bad review because he likes him. Not because he wanted him to stick around longer, but because he specifically didn't want him to go to Memphis. It was for McElwain's own good.
