I see the word "fan" - quotation marks included - thrown around on this board a lot as an insult, implying that the person in question is not a "true" fan of the team they claim to follow. So, my question is, what makes a person a "true" fan?

Oh, and in before "offseason thread." This insult has been used and overused this week since it's rivalry week and all, so I feel the question is germane.

It's that feeling of wanting to give up on everything, and hating the opposing team more than anything else on the planet, when you lose. You can identify your fandom after a loss, everyone is happy after a win.

To actually be a fan of a team, you have to:

1. Attend the school and obtain bachelors and masters degree from said school.

2. Attend every home game and away game from said school.

3. Tailgate for every game that said school has for at least 6 hours.

4. You must know someone that plays or has played for said team.

5. Go on message boards and post about how other people aren't fans because they don't qualify as a fan due to 1-4.

Am I missing anything?

A person who loves his team and supports them through all things. My teams are terrible for the most part. Gators are by far and away the most successful. Combined seven titles in the three major sports for all my teams lol.

Bucs, Rays, Lightning, Magic, Gators...wouldn't turn on them ever. Will die a fan of all of them...unless they move. Then freak them for leaving me

Fan is short for fanatic.

Anyone can be a fan.

But it doesn't make sense for everyone to be a fan of certain teams, and certain teams don't represent every potential "fan".

For example, if you have never been a student or faculty member of a school, that school doesn't represent you, like it or not.

Exactly. So a fan can be grumpy if they feel like it.

When your team loses and its eats at you on the inside and you feel it in your gut

Only way to know you are a true fan

Claiming a random team and be uppity when things are good and ignoring and moving on when things are bad is not a fan

Based on population numbers Florida has a frick ton of sidewalkers. As a resident of the 352 I see them everywhere, daily.
