The problem is that AAU ball (which is really just showcase tournaments now) has become severely diluted. Every mom and dad thinks little Johnny is a DI level player now and there are way too many teams.

Where it's at is the Nike EYBL league. Those teams are all sponsored and the kids are flown all over the country to compete. That's where the elite high DI talent spends most of their summers. They show up in July at the big Showcase events as well.

Thank you for the explanation. I guess it is not really a big deal where I come from, but important nonetheless. I will try to keep an eye on these tournaments in the future. Seems like a great way to display talent.

What's wrong with having kids busy in the summer even if they are not going to play at Baylor or UK?

One last question though...what makes a certain College an "AAU" College?

I hear recruits talking about this from time to time. Perhaps I am just confused.

Look for the Nike Peach Jam. I think the EYBL holds their finals in Atlanta.

Completely different thing. That AAU is an academic designation. Most of the Big Ten (frick you nebraska) are AAU schools.

I know that. But they also talk about the "AAU" being associated with a "Nike School."

I know they can be confusing sometimes, but I know about the other "AAU" very well.

Maybe it is I who is just confused about the Basketball AAU and somehow just mixed things up.

Cool man. Thank you for your explanations. You seem to actually know what you are talking about...which is rare for this site these days.

Peace out!

It's what got Auburn's basketball team put on probation a few years back.

That's a different AAU. What you're referring to here is a group of research universities. Association of American Universities.

This is not the same AAU that is for high school basketball. Amateur Athletic Union.

Basically summer league that all of the high schoolers play in between high school basketball season. It's really exciting to watch. Most good team will have 3-5 prospects on it at once. It's like watching all star teams play all summer.

Sounds sketchy and a bit corrupt honestly.

Meh, it's done in every sport. I knew of a kid who grew up in a very small town on a river in NW Florida. We are talking about 13-14 year old kids. He played for a team Emmitt Smith sponsored. This is baseball we are talking about. Emmitt sent a limo to this one stop light town to pick him up for every game they played. This kid was later drafted by the Braves. He played part of a year in the Bigs and I never heard of him again.

Why are you taking advantage of 13-14 year old kids?

Why would Emmitt Smith do these things?

Don't remember AAU, it was just a booster sending $ directly to Porter ((I think).
