Can Mullen take MSU to the next step and win the SEC West?
Not as long as Saban is at Bama.

So the newbie to the SEC is now a historical expert on MSU and Mullen? Give me a fricking break. State will be the program that MUllen wants it to. There are no handicaps. Especially not any someone from TX would know about
So true. State is an SEC team Texan and if they keep winning and hold on to their coach they'll start holding on to the good recruits in MS. Most good MS recruits go to Bama or LSU.
I may be from Texas but it doesn't take a genius to see that State has the deck stacked against them. It takes more than a coach and honestly I don't see Mullen as being better than Saban, Miles, or Sumlin for that matter. State will always be at a severe monetary disadvantage which will leave it with a smaller stadium, lesser facilities, and less support. There are less than 3 million people in Mississippi and you share that with Ole Miss. Certainly there is no tradition of State winning either outside of the Jackie run when the rest of the West was down.
I don't hate State, I actually have always liked the school because of the similarities with A&M from school colors to similar roots to Jackie Sherrill. That said I don't see how you can consistently beat the other 6 schools in the West when you are battling it out with Ole Miss for 6th place in most fiscal related categories and the gap with the top schools is about double or more in some cases. It's going to take a lot more than Dan Mullen to change that and honestly Mullen still hasn't beaten a good team yet really.
I can see a breakthrough season where State wins the SEC but it would take an awful lot going your way. Personally I think State's best chance is the K State model where they do an amazing job of getting JUCO talent. There are great JUCO's in Mississippi and most of those kids leave the state, stop that flow and you could be on to something but that is much easier said than done.

A follow up questions for State fans.... is that enough for Mullen, or do you think he'll want to get to a place (maybe another conference) where he can win conference championships and be in the discussion for a NC?....
And I'm not saying if Texas offered him a job... what if a program like Nebraska or Va Tech showed interest...

False, plain false. And Mullen has never been a good recruiter. He is a good at player development but Nutt out recruited Mullen annually and Freeze is doing it this year.

That's because Freeze is a documented cheater.

Not in Mississippi
Mullen has locked up the top in state recruits this year with the exception of 2 OL that committed to TSUN, and a OM Legacy QB.

Last time I checked Kailo Moore is committed to State with Shumpert a lean and Cox a State lock.

Did you really type TSUN?

FWIW, I hate using the term TSUN unless it's Egg Bowl week.

Bundy outside of the top 7-8 recruits in MS no one gives a shite but you. We are going to get the best 25ish people a year regardless of where they are from. And if we finish the way we think we are heading, we will blow your class out of the water.

Mullen has the best recruiter in the state with Brewster now on staff.

See Ole Miss 2009-2011. You have had better classes than us the past 3 years and yet we are 3-0 against you in that time.

Who was our coach during that time??

And now that we have a competent coach, we will beat you this year with those classes. Nutt left us with a lot more talent than what Croom left Dan. Nutt just was a lazy idiot.

How can you possibly say this? The guy hasn't developed one player yet. The only thing he has done for you is teach yalls kid to play for 4 Quarters. Bro Wallace was already proven before he went to OM.

So JUCO QB's are proven now? Let me tell Mett and Mackey.

You are using a historical stereotype to try to make this point... one that is largely no longer true for Mississippi State.
Fact: Our Bulldog Club has raised over $70mil in the previous two seasons solely in private athletics donations. We have balanced the budget on ticket sales and not had to dip into ANY of that money outside of facility improvements. That takes a backseat to no one. I'd love to know the per capita numbers nationally.
Fact: We have a massive coaching trust that was set up in the will of one of our most famous donors. There is enough money and accrued interest there to never, ever lose a coach over money or fail to buy one out when the time comes.
Fact: We have $100mil tied up in current football improvements. Our $25 mil football facility will take a back seat to no one. When combined with our(already existing) IPF, it is actually larger than the new IPF that Tennessee just built, which is the measuring stick for the rest of the country. Our stadium is not large, but will have a tremendous percentage of premium seating when the expansion is complete. While still quaint in size, the amenities there will take a back seat to no one. And phase 2 is already in the plan.
