I must have missed where there is a quote anywhere from anybody stating those kids didn't know they were going to greyshirt. If you could re-post it I would be very interested.

The term grayshirt is stupid. Call them what they are walkons.

quote:
First of all, we have never grayshirted a guy here who when he decided to come here didn't know the circumstances that we were going to take with him at The University of Alabama. The reason is sometimes academic, the reason is sometimes physical development and maturity, but never has a player not known [he might be grayshirted.] ... Now I don't think that is a bad thing. If we were not able to do that, those players would never have the opportunity to come here. So we are actually creating an opportunity for a guy to come here, not taking one away. That is why I think there is some disconnect out there and understanding about what grayshirting is all about.
The counterpoint to that is receiver recruit Daryl Collins, who originally committed to the Tide last March but signed with Kentucky on Wednesday because he would have had to grayshirt at Alabama. Was Saban up front with him about the possibility? "I didn't think I was going to be grayshirted," Collins said Wednesday. "It affected [my decision] big time." Does that qualify as "creating an opportunity for a guy to come here, not taking one away?"
There you guys go. Saban says he is always upfront with recruits about greyshirting. Collins committed almost a year ago and had no idea until a week ago. My guess is saban would have never told him like he didn't tell the players last year if he was not taking so much shite for oversigning. In fact I would not be surprised if Collins did not ask him himself. Also, I would bet money Collins would have signed with Bama and the decision on whether or not he greyshirted would have been made AFTER spring tryouts had this issue not been getting the attention it has been getting.

He was aware of the possibility.

Sort of. But what happens is they have tryouts in the spring. Those who committed to bama under the guise of receiving a scholarship, but are not quite as good as someone else during the tryouts in the spring get told to greyshirt or transfer after they have already gone through a lot and sacrificed a lot and bonded with their teammates during spring training.

Mr. Collins, you sir will win a National Championship at Alabama. I can almost guarantee that. The only thing the recruits for Auburn will be doing is worry about beating you and making there season mean something because of it. Congrats to you for picking the right school. One that you will get a grade A education from, one that will win you an SEC title, one that will win you a National Title, and one that will get you to the NFL.
How funny is this now...

I take a job. I am aware I may be fired. If I do my job I do not expect to be. The person hiring me does not tell me I will likely be fired upfront. Saban does not tell these kids and even though it is a possibility, so is getting struck by lightening.
I would bet Collins would have signed with bama last year and the only difference is the issue saban has with oversigning is getting more recognized by everyone.

A kid acknowledged that Saban tells them upfront it is a one year thing.
BTW, the kid went to Ky the week before signing day. He was informed enough in advance to set that up.

This thread is full of win. You have boogs sandqueefing over Saban doing something that isn't even against the rules, immediately after an undefeated season where Cecil Newton whored his son out for $200k.

You cant say that because you have no link or proof. At least thats what the bad barner told me right after he touched me in my special place.

and once again, this is the kid who was told grayshirting was a strong possibility and had time to find a spot on another SEC roster. You have failed in backing up your argument yet again.

They make this argument ever day, and fail to back it up every day because of exatly what you just said. Its getting quite pathetic honestly.

K Scar is getting old fast. Between his rant on why Chizik should be ashamed for saying "War Damn Eagle" and pot stirring "look at me, I'm Mr. Super Investigator" articles like this one, I am losing interest.

The guys Saban grayshirts are told either from the very beginning or at some point along the way with enough time to change their minds that there is a possibility they might have to grayshirt depending on how the numbers work out.
That is why when Saban saw that there would not be room for Collins, he let him know that he could either grayshirt or go elsewhere while there was still time in the recruiting process. He chose UK and I am fine with that.
Collins' quote does not support your allegation that he was never told of the possibility of grayshirting, only that in Collins' mind, he didn't think he would end up having to. Besides, what high school kid with any swag at all is going to publicly admit voluntarily that he was just a backup plan?

Uhhhhhh, Alabama is still a public university, right?
So is aubrun.....why wont they release what has been requested by the Bham snooze?

Oversigning by the numbers. Look who the top 3 were this year. Not Bama and Not LSU.
Team by team look at class size over five year span chart.

Do you STILL not understand you are not oversigned if you have a spot for everyone you sign without cuts?
I am sorta at a loss for words how some people can be so dumb after something has been explained so often and is so simple.
