Makes me wonder what Tuscaloosa would be like if the capital hadn't been moved to Montgomery in the 1850s. A fluke fire played the role in the change.

No thanks. I would never want State in a ghetto nor do I think OM people would want the same
You have no idea what Jackson, MS would look like if it had a major university there for the last 160 or so years. BR is kind of an exception here too

I agree, it would be very difficult for a state (talent rich as it is) the size of Mississippi to have two SEC programs sustain success in football.
I can't imagine what it would be like if there was a second flagship school in Missouri...

Maybe not in the Deep South. Lets be honest here. Columbia, South Carolina and Baton Rouge, Louisiana are the examples immediately available.

We could easily be seeing both teams be pretty good if Freeze continues recruiting well OOS, while Mullen continues to get more of the MS talent.

True
I guess I was thinking more on the US scale with Austin, Columbus, Lansing/East Lansing, Raleigh, etc.

Kind of agree. I think Jackson and the state of Mississippi would have benefitted from one major university in the capital.

I wish Tuscaloosa had a little more to offer, sort of like Athens, Georiga, but I'm glad it didn't become what Montgomery is.

If Nutt could have held on to all of his recruits, and had a disciplined team (basically not being a jackass), then I think we may have had another 90's era on our hand. Freeze has impressed me so far. If he can keep it up like you said, and he carries that over to the field, then yeah I think it's very possible. But Mullen has to stay in Starkville for this to happen.

Southern isn't a part of this.

I doubt Southern Miss outgrows its "teacher college" roots if there was a "UM" just an hour away in Jackson.

Isn't USM the largest school in the state?

We actually have to support 4: State, Ole Miss, Southern MS and Jackson State. Delta State, Alcorn and Valley aren't big enought to count

I think it was briefly a few years ago. That's no longer the case. I'm sure the Ole Miss and State faithful can answer that better.

You are incredibly stupid if you believe this

No, but it is comparably sized from a undergrad student standpoint. It is larger than OM, but a few k smaller than MSU.
Their athletics support is pretty bad in comparison, but still better than the #3 school in most states. Think they average 35-40k for home football games...

Well, I just looked it up.
Mississippi State University 21,424
University of Southern Mississippi 17,768

Was born in Lansing, still have tons of family there from my mom's side of the family. Lansing is a ghetto...

When I say largest I dont mean counting all of your cow pastures as part of your campus. I mean in # of undergrads.
