You can mostly throw out the scholly limitations. Saban ignores those and his sign and cut strategy gives him a major advantage similar to Bryant. Sure other teams could do what saban does, but most do not so he has an advantage not unlike Bryant when he signed too many

i'm only 26 and don't know too much about the bear but from all the mystique surrounding him and everything that is said he did for the game. I don't think saban could surpass him as the goat
I believe he could. Bear was dominant, but the SEC was not what it was today or even close. Also, even after Bear was established and had won a NC or two, he had a down period and Bama was very close to firing him or forcing his retirement.

He's halfway there already, would only be 65 in another 5 yrs. I think he's here that long, maybe a little more if he decides he isn't ready to get out of coaching after that.
No way he keeps up this pace that long. I think he can have Bama at a high level for a few more years but his performance is going to drop off after that. I don't see him hitting 5 national titles.

Actually, Paterno has the most wins over Robinson, but only has 2 NC on his resume. Would you consider him the best coach of all time? I wouldn't. Longevity does not equal greatness
Good points.

1968-1970, Bryant went 20-13-1. There was plenty of discussion of him stepping down and being replaced. Back to back 6-5 seasons. I will try to find something about it.

Alabama will be coach Sabans last stop. Anyone who thinks otherwise is wishing.
In my book he is already there

Bear Bryant won 6 National Titles at Alabama. Saban has 3
Does Saban get extra cred because he was able to do it at more than one school?

The 1967 team was billed as another national championship contender with star quarterback Kenny Stabler returning, but the team stumbled out of the gate and tied Florida State 37–37 at Legion Field. The season never took off from there, with the Bryant-led Alabama team finishing 8–2–1, losing in the Cotton Bowl Classic to Texas A&M, coached by former Bryant player and assistant coach Gene Stallings. In 1968, Bryant again could not match his previous successes, as the team went 8–3, losing to the University of Missouri 35–10 in the Gator Bowl. The 1969 and 1970 teams finished 6–5 and 6–5–1 respectively.
After these disappointing efforts, many began to wonder if the 57-year old Bryant was washed up. He himself began feeling the same way and considered either retiring from coaching or leaving college football for the NFL.

If you watched and listened to Saban last nite after the game he will end his coaching at UofA. He finaly acts like it's home.

Likewise take your jealousy and lies of Alabama, BB, and their NCs somewhere else. There ain't a person on this earth that doubts Bear's and Alabama's accomplishments during his tenure. I like you but you make yourself look dumb and petty when these discussions come up.

That's not the same as saying he was going to be fired or forced to retire. Not even close.

Perhaps. But Bryant turned around both Kentucky and Texas A&M and came extremely close to winning them titles too.
The similarities between Bryant and Saban are remarkable. They both revived 3 programs throughout their coaching tenures. The one advantage Saban has here is obviously the NC at LSU, while Bryant got his first title at Alabama.
Saban will not come anywhere close to 313 wins, so one will have to look at championships to distinguish between the two. As it was mentioned earlier, Bryant will hold a decided advantage in SEC titles, but Saban could match him in national titles, albeit in much less time as a head coach.
I guess it will eventually come down to personal preference, as these things normally do.

Another dissapointing season in 1970 saw the Tide go 6-5-1. Many critics and fans were left wondering if Bryant's magical touch had aged beyond repair. Bryant himself wondered if the college game had passed him by, considering retirement
Some of you gumps need to understand your own history. People were questioning Bryant and many at alabama thought it was time for him to step down in 1970. Bryant thought that might be the case as well, that he might should retire.
Then he integrated Alabama football and began the greatest run in SEC history in the 1970's with the wishbone and black athlete.

He would probably have to win 3 in the next 5 years.

Sure it is. Tubberville was forced out because AU thought a change was needed. Bryant would have been treated with the utmost respect, but a losing season in 1971 and there was definitely a possibility bama would have asked him to step down behind the scenes.

Again, that's very different than saying the school was about to fire him after what had really just been two bad seasons.
