Huge difference between what one idiot fan did and your team not getting past the 50 in a national title game.

And you want him to pay for that with life in prison or the death penalty?

IMO, people saying he deserves the death penalty are joking.

quote:

I never said he shouldn't have to pay for those costs, but demanding his life isn't going to cover that monty.

With what money? It's already been stated (in this thread) that the soil removal has already cost $80,000. Do you honestly believe he can pay that back to Auburn?

quote:

a lot of Auburn people are overreacting because they are too emotionally vested in the trees.

Geez, I wonder why we're emotionally invested in the trees? He intentionally destroyed property (that wasn't his) to cause harm to Auburn and Auburn fans. I know that y'all think us rolling the trees is stupid and trashy. Whatever. It's our tradition, and we enjoy it.

That is like telling you to buy a new car after yours is stolen and then claiming "no harm, no foul."

Come on. I'm making analogies, which are necessarily imperfect. Since I am making these analogies to a group of people with different cultural touchstones, I am using extremely well-known objects - things that just about everyone on this thread would consider valuable. This is how analogies work.

tl;dr - Don't be intentionally stupid. It's unbecoming and it forces me to talk to you like you're a child.

Maybe his analogy shouldn't have used a priceless artifact and a priceless painting when discussing trees that y'all like to roll with toilet paper and power wash. Correct me if I'm wrong, but 1000s of ppl that "love" those trees roll and power wash them knowing that they're shortening the lives of those trees?

Let me add mine in here.

1) I want a him to be afforded a fair and impartial jury.

2) I want the judge to carefully consider both the statutory and case law that has been provided by the defense via motions that relate to venerable objects and the relative worth of trees, and for him to make a ruling based on both the concept of Stare decisis and the facts of the case.

3) I want the burden to be born by the State to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, and failing that, an appropriate ruling to be issued by the bench.

4) If he is found guilty, I want the sentence to be reasoned, rationale, and devoid of emotion.

All in all, not too much to ask.

I have no problem with any of that and I agree. I think the DA should have offered a reasonable plea deal as well, but I'm afraid politics got in the way.

There is really no disputing the fact that he did what he did. The only defense is to question/attack whether his actions meet every element of the crimes he has been charged with. I think he should be entitled to do that before a fair and impartial jury and judge.
