I think it has to do with a melting pot of factors. A long-time isolationist culture, excessive weight on honor and success (more often than not conflating the two ideas) and a good mixture of sexual repression.
Their whole culture comes across as one which is desperately stressed out and is searching for some way -- ANY way -- to blow off some steam.
