My goodness some of you are so obsessed with this. Let it go and go bitch about the refs some more.

I mean really wtf does it matter to you? If a fan wants to be a fan of a team, Pro, College, who gives a shite except for some douchebag who wants to act as if they are better than others. Get a damned better hobby bro!

I was born and raised in the Tuscaloosa area, and have been an Alabama fan my entire life, but chose to attend and play for Georgia Tech due to academic reasons. Starter for three years, with a National Championship. Got my post graduate from MIT. Still root for the Crimson Tide. Am I a sidewalk fan or a bandwagoner?

Why do you care? Every school has many fans that didn’t attend the university. Maybe their parent/sibling/best friend went there, or maybe they live in the area and support the local team. None of it is worth questioning someone’s fandom over.

And when those fans buy tickets, licensed team gear, etc, they are supporting the team and university. Programs would never be able to pay for the coaches and facilities that make it possible to field a good team without fans who never attended that university.

You'd be on here bragging like hell if you went to places outside of LA and saw LSU gear everywhere. Don't even lie.

Every city I’ve visited has had its fare share of LSU fans. It’s one of the things I love about traveling. Also the fact that people tend to think highly of LSU fans in other places, which is why I laugh whenever someone here posts that LSU fans are hated. Couldn’t be farther from the truth.

There are a lot of Alabama and LSU fans in WV.....Probably 10% of them can spell Alabama.... and 1% Louisiana (more letters).....But, a lot have been life-long fans
Now as stepping into any classroom anywhere...... I guarantee it is less than 100% in this state....

“Sidewalk” fan is the term I believe you meant to use. Please tell me you are an LSU grad.

How many of us stepped foot in the military? If you didn't does that mean we can't pull for our military?

Sad to think how bandwaggonish the majority is.
How does one define "bandwaggonish," exactly?

Also I must say this was a clever thought for a thread; I’ve never seen it discussed on here before. Maybe we can do a who was better, Bo or Herschel thread later on.

I only personally know 2 LSU fans. Neither went to LSU. One never went to college, the other went to USA.

I don't let these things bother me.

Naw. You’re misguided.....and, btw, good job on MIT. Hopefully, you put it to good business use and not nerded it up.

ETA; what position?

Alabama fans are pretty intolerable, as such things go, but this is just dumb.

Its an appeal to authenticity; if one does not arrive at fandom through a patronage of personal matriculation at an institution, it is somehow suspect or substandard. Much like the naturalistic fallacy, it presumes that there is a single proscribed 'proper' way to be a fan, and all others fail the test by not being tied to a single reductive 'pure' formula of becoming a fan.

Are there bandwagon fans? Sure. Are they annoying? Sure. Are there a ton of other fans who arrived at their personal allegiances over decades, through intermarriage, through knowing someone involved with a program, through them winning money on their games, etc? Also, yes.

This purist nonsense is just the kind of shitbird thing that you expect of people critiquing those more successful than they are. Just shut up and deal with it, until you are good enough to take them down. The rest of us have the grace to do as much, while you provide these Alabama fans fodder for 'they hate us cause they ain't us' silliness. That's entirely the fault of people like the OP.

While being an alum / student certainly gives one a more nuanced connection with a team, state schools belong to the people of the state; they support the schools through tax revenue, vote on ballot measures involving the schools, non-alums patronize the school through tuition for a relative or by supporting athletics . . .

"Sidewalks" are fully entitled to fandom.

Watch how you throw out the word "nerd".
Actually, I welcome the moniker...this nerd fricked opposing players up, and then went on to provide jobs to thousands.
