He didn't pick up the slack in '10 when he had more experienced offensive talent than any Bama team in a long time.

He needed to move on. Give the new guy a chance.

Probably didn't help that Pendry was pretty much done.

In the time McElwain was at Bama, 2008-2011, Alabama had some of the highest scoring offenses they have ever had. Alabama scored over 60 points twice in 2010. 1991 was the last time Bama scored in the 60s. Alabama also scored over 420 points every season he was there. Before 2008, you have to go back to 1977 the last time Bama scored over 400 points in a season. 2010 was Alabama's second highest scoring offense in history with 464 points. So yeah, he was essential to Bama's success and will be missed.

The play calling in the red zone has been poor. We need to improve in that area.

I don't think so. Saban decides what the OC does.

How can you say this when Nussmeier hasn't even coached a game here and McElwain helped us win 2 NC's? When are people going to learn that no matter who the OC is, we will always run the offense Saban wants to and that is fine with me.

Unbiased/Bench: You are the only one that is so freaking negative about winning 2 NCs in 3 years. If you were alive in the 90s, I bet you almost had a heart attack when Stallings averaged 10 games a year for 7 years and Stallings and Saban coach with the same philosophy.

When did Nick start coaching offense?

Everyone knows that Saban is a micro manager and dictates everything that happens. He may not call all the plays, but the OC follows the plan layed out by Saban.

Exactly. McElwain had alot of freedom to call plays before he got here but Saban will always have a hand in our offense and that won't change just because we got a new OC.

I know full well about Nick's micro managing tendencies , but I will tell you this. Miles messes around with our offense 10 times more than Saban did while he was here. Jimbo had pretty much full reign of the offense while Nick was here. During practice, it was rare when Nick was seen on the offensive field. He was all over the defense. Mud champ was DC in name only at LSU. Nick ran everything, and I mean, everything about our defense from teaching technique to defensive game plans.

I think we will miss how well he developed QB's

Dude, he didnt develop QB's, he developed handoffers. With Nuss, I'm hoping, you will see the first real QB developer Alabama has had for as long as I can really remember. He did a DAMN fine job with Jake Locker and I think he will work wonders with AJ.

I will not miss McElwain in the slightest bit. His redzone play calling was atrocious and 3rd down play calling wasnt much better. He got bailed out a LOT by T-Rich and Ingram's retarded ability to get out of even more retarded situations with positive yardage when they should have been stopped short. And his insistence on running the same 4 plays out of 15 different formations made me want to crack a cinder block wall with my skull on many occasions.

I thank him for the job he did and the dedication he gave to our program, but I welcome Coach Nuss with open arms and am excited about what he will do for our offense. I expect him to throw in some wrinkles that these SEC schools aren't very used to having come from the heavily offensive minded PAC 12.

I know Saban isn't going to let him go wild or anything, and probably wont change basic idea of the offense up much, if at all. But I do expect some wrinkles thrown in that will keep defenses on their toes.

Your post epitomizes what I hate about our fanbase. The numbers don't lie, and our offense under McElwain was one of the most productive in Alabama history. It produced one Heisman winner, another Heisman finalist, and won 2 BCS Championships.

Yet some want to focus on inconsequential shite. You know why he ran the same plays out of different formations? Because they worked and kept defenses off balance.

Did he have bad game? Sure, the 09 Tennessee game was just atrocious. But go back and watch the 09 SEC Championship game, the 11 Iron Bowl, or this year's BCS game and tell me those weren't masterful offensive game plans. There are many more games like those, those are just off the top of my head.

I liked McElwain a lot. That being said, he can be replaced. Can he be replaced by Nuss? I don't know. But I don't expect a huge drop off.

I just think that much of this has to do with the offensive talent that we accrued during his time here. A chimp could have coached JJ, MI, and TR, and they still would have produced like they did.

I am not even saying that he was not good. He was really good, and I am really appreciative. BUT, I do not think he will be missed as much as some of you want to think.

I'm not bagging on Nuss. The verdict is still out, but I'd rather go with the known commodity than the unknown.

I do think we'll be fine and won't see a huge drop off.
