To drive home the point and sort of put the shoe on the other foot, you don't hear the SEC saying they are the greatest basketball conference in the country simply because we have one school that is a juggernaut in basketball. We acknowledge UK basketball for what it is but don't claim the rest of the conference is something it is not, though with UF's success, an argument could be made.

I also don't buy the bottom tier teams are better. kU is absolutely the worst fricking program in major college sports.

You make an excellent point. The SEC claims to be the best at football and baseball. Basketball could get better, top to bottom, and will still never catch the ACC in that regard although we will have our very competitive years and Kentucky and UF are likely to always represent us well in basketball ... hopefully Mizzou too, one day. South Carolina too, one day soon.

Nick Saban shrugs off Charlie Weis' comments about SEC: 'I just think our league is fantastic'

https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/index.ssf/2013/05/nick_saban_charlie_weis.html

At last week's Crimson Caravan stop in Fort Payne, Saban said "there's a lot of animosity out there because of the success that we have in our league."

"I just think our league is fantastic," Saban said, "It's a great competitive venue and I just love being apart of it."

I notice Saban didn't talk about all his respect for Charlie Weis and what he's doing at Kansas.

I noticed that too. When he read Weis' statement he was probably chuckling under his breath about both Notre Dame and Kansas.

Here's what would be interesting and possibly a more even match up of teams.

SEC 5-14 vs. Big12 1-10.

Handicap that sucker by sitting out the SEC top 4 and the SEC might still win the majority of the games.

I think SEC would win most of those for sure

I agree except you get into the issue of who qualifies.

The SEC, by nature of the beast, cannot have 5-14 qualify for a bowl. But I understand, completely, the gist of your premise and agree 110%.
