San Diego State just made their fourth Sweet 16 in history, all since 2011. En route to the Sweet 16, SDSU has only played one single digit seed.

2011: Northern Colorado (15), Temple (7)
2014: New Mexico St (13) + North Dakota St (12)
2023: Charleston (12) + Furman (13)
2024: UAB (12) + Yale (13)

Houston in its fifth straight Sweet 16 and has only played one game against a Top 8 seed in their 10 games to get to the second weekend. In 2021, Houston played four double digit seeds to get to the Final Four.

That's some strange bracket luck.

A deeper dive..

San Diego State
2011 2 seed played 15 + 7 (expected)
2014 4 seed played 13 + team that upset 5th seed (Oklahoma)
2023 5 seed played 12 + team that upset 4th seed (Virginia)
2024 5 seed played 12 + team that upset 4th seed (Auburn)

Houston
2019 3 seed played 14 + team that upset 6th seed (Iowa State)
2021 2 seed played 15 + 10 (expected) *
2022 5 seed played 12 + 4 (expected)
2023 1 seed played 16 + 9 (expected) *
2024 1 seed played 16 + 9 (expected) *

* 7 vs 10 and 8 vs 9 are toss up games imo

San Diego State certainly had some good luck, but I think Houston played about who they expected to play. The one "upset" was 11th seed Ohio State beating #6 seed Iowa State, which imo, isn't really a big upset.

Great stat either way.
