It is simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football. If you're lucky or unimpressive in a win, your rating will probably fall. If you're strong and unlucky in a loss, it will probably rise.

Important to note that this system still holds the old “eye test” or how impressive of a win a team has, which is sort of outdated thinking in the new world of college football that we have today. In the words of Al Davis, “just win, baby!” The graph shows that 9 of the top 25 are in the SEC. Realizing that not all 9 of the SEC team will be in the playoff, this list is a pretty good indication that the SEC will be well represented with the highest number of bids.

20. Penn St. (3-6)

Seriously?
Penn State is 3-6 overall and 0-6 in Big Ten conference play.
That’s reason enough to guffaw at this ranking system.

Anything from ESPN is usually flawed.

And if you are Notre Dame, neither of those things matter.

Is Penn State at #21 an error?

So ND would whip everyone in the SEC but A&M who was able to beat them in a close game. Makes sense A&M is undefeated.
