You do realize that Alabama's D hasn't been the best since 2011 right?

Alabama's defense has been # 1 in the SEC in total and scoring defense (and close to if not # 1 in the country in both categories) every year since 2009, and usually by a comfortable margin in both categories. In 2008 I think they were tied for first in SEC in total and were second in scoring.

This is why you don't pick AU. They had a perfect scenario last year, new style and a favorable schedule. This year, in their last 7 games, they play at MSU, at OM, at UGA, and at Bama. In that 7 games they also switch UT for South Carolina, and also play TAMU. The game before that 7 game stretch, they play LSU at Home. AU will be lucky to win 9 games this year.

What makes LSU fans think that they have a chance this year? This is likely to be an 8-4 or 9-3 year for them. You don't lose Mettenrape and two first round talents at WR and get better.

LSU has a chance because they should be much, much better on defense this year. LSU has been better with worse offenses than they return next year

I agree. Same with Bama. Both defenses will be much better this year. This is the personalities of these teams. Offense plays to the Defense. The Bama/LSU game in BR will determine the champion.

I want LSU to be better. What specifically will be the defensive upgrade?

Because LSU envies us, in all things.

experience, especially in the secondary. LSU started 2 freshman at corner last year.

We should be much better in backfield as well but this will likely be best overall DL for Saban.

That may be the case, but will opposing defenses having had a full off season to study it make a difference?

maybe SEC defenses will finally catch in Malzahn's 5th year.

Gus Malzahn's offense is nothing new.

He's coaches offenses in the SEC for many years now.

1) Auburn
2) Alabama
3) Mississippi State
4) LSU
5) Ole Miss
6) Texas A&M
7) Arkansas

3-5 can be flip-flopped in any way, IMO. Ole Miss is talented, Mississippi State returns a ton of experience and a great player in Dak Prescott, and LSU is always talented but very young this year and will have terrible quarterback play.

This is true.

Scoring defense
2013 - 13.9 PPG - #1
2012 - 10.9 PPG - #1
2011 - 8.2 PPG - #1 (tGOAT)
2010 - 13.5 PPG - #1
2009 - 11.7 PPG - #1
2008 - 14.3 PPG - #2 (Florida was #1 with 12.9 PPG)

Total defense
2013 - 286.5 YPG - #1
2012 - 250.0 YPG - #1
2011 - 183.6 YPG - #1 (tGOAT)
2010 - 286.4 YPG - #1
2009 - 245.4 YPG - #1
2008 - 263.5 YPG - tied for #1 with Tennessee

Rushing defense - what drives a Nick Saban 3-4 scheme
2013 - 102.2 YPG - #1
2012 - 76.4 YPG - #1
2011 - 72.2 YPG - #1 (tGOAT)
2010 - 110.2 YPG - #2 (Auburn was #1 at 109.1 YPG)
2009 - 79.4 YPG - #1
2008 - 74.4 YPG - #1

Basically, from this thread, I've gathered this:

Favorites
Alabama
Auburn

A step below the favorites
LSU

"Swing" teams - could have a great season and could have a bad season
Ole Miss
Mississippi State
Texas A&M

Bad
Arkansas

Stats are one thing, heart and desire are another. Bama nor LSU had that "fire" in their Defenses last year. I see another 2011 type Defenses for both teams this year. Should be awesome.

Nick Fairley, Zach Clayton, Mike Blanc, Michael Goggans, Antoine Carter, Corey Lemonier, Josh Bynes, Craig Stevens, and Daren Bates did work that year in run defense.

The pass defense, however, failed us miserably.

Y'all also had some seriously timely stops that season. Y'all were fun to watch on both sides of the ball.

The 2010 Auburn team...

I'm gonna say it...
