Was it as obvious that Kelly was going to be a failure as is Golding?

Question for people that associate with teams other than LSU or Ol Miss since they can be impartial.
I remember people making fun of the kelly hire but my bias kept me from seeing it. There was some concern of him being a square and not fitting in with the LSU culture but after Miles and Orgeron, we were ready for a "boring" coach.
But I can't remember a more obvious 2.5 years-at-best than Golding.

He did a good job of keeping things together and making it to the semi-finals of the CFP, so it wouldn't surprise me if he does well.
Its apples and oranges though. LSU expects their coach to compete for a title every year, and OM probably just wants to be competitive every year. I didn't think that LSU would be competing for titles every year with Kelly, but I think that Golding can keep OM competitive.

If I'm being honest I thought Golding was announced as a 'permanent' HC just so Ole Miss wouldn't be in jeopardy of missing the CFP after Lane split.
I figured they'd revisit this and look to hire someone else postseason, but he's done a pretty good job on the field.
If this tampering stuff actually happened, I have no idea what they do.
But to answer your question, as someone who is intimately familiar with Pete Golding, he's a likeable guy and I really rooted for him as a DC, but he's probably not someone I'd run out and hire to lead my program.
Kelly was not a likeable guy and I never rooted for him, but I expected him to do better than he did as a HC, so sort of the opposite.
I don't think either are/were an obvious failure going in though.
Of course I also thought Burt Bielema was a good hire so WTF do I know.

My opinion on BK is that Scott Woodward was the bigger problem and I think what we are seeing unfold right now it at least shows that Woody was a big problem. Not saying BK was a great fit or put in the required effort but it's hard to not think he just threw his hands up when he didn't have full control.

Not disagreeing about Pete’s prospects, but Dooley at UT, Harsin at AU, and the DC who got promoted at State after Leach were right there with Golding.
To answer the original question….BK seemed like a weird fit, but I thought he could be somewhat successful. I remember hearing people not LSU affiliated saying he’d definitely win a championship and feeling like that was way over the top. The making fun to me was more about over expectations originally. All the fake accent and grinding on recruits stuff were just major fuel for the fire.
