Coach Fulmer won about 75% at UT which is good but his last 4 years he was 29-21. I'm not really familiar with the Vols program but 29-21 at a school used to being upper echelon won't cut it.

Funny fact: UF went to that same damn Citrus Bowl the year he said that.

But, yeah, in hindsight, I think they should have let Fulmer stay. Too late now. That ship done sailed.
Their roster talent toward the end was nowhere near what it was during the 90's and early 2000's. He was 0-4 vs. Urban Meyer, and South Carolina was starting to gain ground as well.
I believe had Kiffin stayed at Tennessee, he would have at least improved their roster depth if nothing else. Their defense would have been strong under Monte as well. It just happened to not work out for them, but that has nothing to do with the initial decision to make the coaching change.
It's becoming obvious now how good a coach Chavis is, since we brought him on board and gave him elite talent to work with. He took a lot of heat from Tennessee fans toward the end, but in reality he probably deserves a lot of credit keeping Tennessee afloat during those lean years. Even in 2007, the stars aligned for them to go to Atlanta. Florida blasted them 59-20, but had the misfortune of playing the West's two best teams- LSU and Auburn- who Tennessee was able to avoid and get ahead in the standings.
I have a lot of respect for what Fulmer accomplished his first ten years at Tennessee, but toward the end they had been passed up by their three Division rivals.

100% accurate.
My only issue with Chavis is he really didn't like recruiting.

Really and not being sarcastic becomes he seems to at LSU. Alot to kids are saying how much they love Coach Chavis and came to play for him.

Point taken, because a lot of fans did realize it, but it's not Hamilton's fault that Fulmer hung around so long.
maybe not solely, but he had a lot to do with it

Fulmer took us to a level Majors couldn't get us to. Rodney Garner was a great asset also. In one class he brought us Jamal Lewis, Deon Grant and Cosey Coleman all out of the State of Georgia. From 1995-1998 Fulmer's record is one of the greatest in SEC history: 11-1, 10-2, 11-2, 13-0. Two Sec Titles and One National Championship. 45-5 over 4 seasons isn't too shabby. Alabama was Johnny Major's albatross. Florida and Spurrier were Fulmer's. The 2001 SECCG exposed Fulmer though..Nick Saban made halftime adjustments and Fulmer and "Third and Long" Chavis never caught on and LSU spoiled UT's try at a Second National Championship in 4 years. TO ME this started the downward spiral of UT football. We had some "GOOD TEAMS" after that never teams that were among the "ELITE"
I will agree with everything posted here

A+
It's become more and more obvious that Chavis wasn't really the problem in all of this, it was Fulmer's lack of evaluating and bringing in elite talent.
Tennessee would sign some very impressive classes of 5 star players that we could do absolutely NOTHING with. The rest of them never panned out like they should.
Fulmer got lazy and it transitioned to the rest of the players.

I once heard a bama fan say, "I wish Saban would cross that field and give Ol Fat Phil an arse whooping!"
Fat Phil was a 2 time ALL-SEC OL.
Phil catches a lot of heat for being overweight, but there's been several coaches in CFB fatter than him in recent yrs
