All I've heard my entire life is that Bear Bryant was an awesome coach, BUT he was a cheater. I realize that this is coming from old school Tiger fans who were jealous of his success, so that needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

I'd like to know how much of that is true, or better stated: What was he accused of specifically?

EASY to sum up

HE was the best coach. He did what other coaches did, he just did it better than they did.

/thread

(he'd do the same thing today too)

I am sure he had a co-Ed on the side every now and then. But hey who wouldn't.

if that were the standard, then you'd think Auburn would have a championship by now.

I just wanted to pop in and say that Bear is dead and has been for quite some time. All you rival fans need to stop living in the past.

nah. we've heard it way too many times for it to NOT be super old.

and WE'RE the ones that bring the Bear up all the time...lol. remember that, the next time you hear fans calling bama fans for living on the past... just think about how many times YOU see a bama fan bringing him up vs opposing fans.

I don't think he was a "cheater" per se He knew the rules and took advantage of them. Back then you didn't have a limit on scholarships or the players you could sign, so he would sign kids that might never see the field at Bama, but as long as he had them he didn't have to play against them. He would also schedule an extra SEC game so that at the end of the season Bama might be, for example, 8-2 in conference while everone else was 7-2 because Bama played the extra game and so Bama wins the SEC.

There were no rules against it, and nothing stopped the other teams from doing it as well...

But still in the grand scheme of things it might be called poor sportsmanship. Or it can be called brilliant. All depends on how you want to look at it and what team you pull for.

He was caught for some irregularities at Texas A&M--and so was Woody Hayes at Ohio State two years later.

Any accustations during his tenure at Alabama are lame and reek of jealousy.

Read the book Junction Boys about his time at Texas A&M, You will see that there were some questionable things that he did in the recruiting of players. But its like everyone said all the coaches were doing it.

It wasn't a Bama fan that started this thread about him, though.

before you go about talking about "classic posts" you ought to develop a little more of a reputation. all you're trying to do is start a thread that gets a lot of responses. i get it, it's fun.. but, don't be a complete idiot douchebag while trying to stir the pot. there are other ways that don't involve you showing us the crevices of your butt to accomplish this goal. the topic alone should get you where you want to be... otherwise you're a failure.

bear bryant and cheating used to be a hot topic... when forums weren't old-hat.
