As a Ga. fan I hope they hire Gruden and Mullen stays in the West. Mullen is a proven college guy and has done a great job w/ less. Dont understand why Gruden would even coach in college? I guess Tenn is the favorite because his wife was cheerleader and he was on the staff. But this guy hasnt coached in almost 10 years and hasnt been in the college game in almost 20. 10M a year or whatever is being thrown around and might sign him, but what happens if he flops? They aint never gettin out of that one (buy out).

Ha. Prepare thyself for Greg Schiano. And the thing is, that wouldn't be a bad hire for UT (would ultimately be better than Gruden in my opinion). Gruden ain't walking through that door and Mullen has already declined.

I dont wish ill will on Mr. Gruden but I think he knows better than to try this. Hes screwing w/ those boys emotions. You see their schedule next year? Dont care if he is Vince Lombardi he could start 0-6.

Just to make sure I am reading this correctly, you think Schiano would be a more successful coach than Jon Gruden?

Hell yes. He has a track record to prove it. He would be a very solid hire.

Gruden is a myth. A name. You'd be paying out the arse for someone who has never recruited or coached at the college level.

Gruden as a college or pro coach does not compute.

Makes $6.5M per year working part time.

Net Worth $22.5M

So ask yourself why on earth would he go back to the grind of coaching. Nothing against Tennessee or any other coaching spot. Just doesn't make sense.

Oh, so no way Jon Gruden could recruit or hire a staff of recruiters? I am sure he would have to get back into the film room to figure out how to coach at the college level...probably a huge learning curve for him there.

Nobody is saying Gruden cant coach obviously he can. The dude won a Super Bowl. Can he or will he be willing to recruit and manage the college program. I got no idea how he will do but aside from his name, he doesnt exactly have a college resume. Honestly I hope Tenn hires him. No matter what it will make the SEC more fun. Hes a character for sure.

"It's further down the road than it's ever been" = "ESPN is more broke than they've ever been and no way that Gruden contract gets renewed".

I have read those very words many times on this board and it's a lazy statement.

I do too. He would kill it at Tennessee.

There are a lot of guys who can recruit or hire a staff of recruiters and have a track record of success at the college level that would cost a lot less and be more of a sure thing than Gruden. That's my point.

"Let's hire Gruden because GRUDEN! Then GRUDEN can hire a staff to do all the work for him while he cashes checks. Because GRUDEN! UT IS BACK BAYBEE!"

Edited to add, because I want to be clear: I hope UT hires Gruden. They won't, but I hope they do. It will be a lot of fun for the rest of us.

Look, Gruden isn't even my first choice. I would definitely prefer a big time college name.

The point is, thinking a Super Bowl winning coach would not win at Tennessee is fricking dumb.

And I am glad that you, and many others, want to see him at UT. I hope your wish comes true.

Good point. In thinking about the money it will take for UT to get Gruden, if he flops and they have to buy him out along with the current Lyle buyout, UT will be doing the equivalent of going "all in" in a poker game with Gruden.

If Gruden fails UT may have to board up Neyland.

Nice. Vols get Gruden and we keep Orgeron. It will be UT vs LSU in the SECCG next year and finally all will be right in the SEC.
