They aren’t recruiting players with NIL. The NIL collectives are.

Our Chancellor just told the NCAA to go frick themselves so I think we will be fine.

We're going to war:
This will force clarification on rules which everyone, including the NCAA should be all for.

NEWS: As sources say Tennessee faces multiple Level 1 and Level 2 violations, the school’s chancellor fires back at how the NCAA is handling NIL investigation. In letter obtained by ESPN she calls NCAA allegations “factually untrue and procedurally wrong.”
quote:
Chancellor Donde Plowman also calls NCAA enforcement “intellectually dishonest” for pursuing infractions amid a changing rules landscape
quote:
Tennessee appears to be fighting a charge of lack of institutional control. Plowman: “It is inconceivable that our institution’s leadership would be cited as an example of exemplary leadership in July 2023, then as a cautionary example of a lack of institutional control only six months later.”

There are a few nerds on here that will but yeah.

At any rate, the NCAA probably thought they'd get a different response but the thing is... even though I don't like where we're at on NIL. The NCAA abandoned its duty to regulate and when they did so they allowed all of it to happen. They're working to clean up NIL now and something does need to be done but you can't lock someone up for a crime that didn't exist until the day after they did it.
The NCAA is trying to pretend they didn't pray for a congressional bailout while abandoning all pretense of regulation. They're going to have to let that time frame go because none of these schools are going to play ball.
If you can't get UT on board with this, you're pretty fricked because the others aren't going along either.

Of course you are. You have to or else be gummed to death by an old, toothless tiger.

Nah. I think the surprising thing would be if Tennessee just rolled over and took it. Question is if the other University Presidents (and their TV Executive overlords) have the gumption to lambast a name brand to try to regain control of the bus skidding across the highway or if they’re using these various inquiries to feel out how they want this to all go down. Florida and Tennessee just got sloppiest (and most public) with their NIL practices so they’re getting picked to take the lashings first.

She's right. Her letter is a top notch response. Accurate and pointed.

By definition cheating cannot be legal. You surely understand what people are saying here - that what used to be cheating is now done via a legal loophole.

i get hating your rival and all. It is funny to laugh at NCAA investigations but i have no idea how anyone can be on the NCAA's side here.
love that response from the president

And the collectives are university representatives just like boosters. It’s illegal.

Now we have some details on Tennessee, via @nytimes. "The investigation is focused in part on the use of a private jet by a so-called donor collective to fly a high-profile recruit ... to campus.
Collective: Spyre. Recruit: Nico Iamaleava

Nico is Spyre’s client. Nothing to see here.
