VOLS are in deep, deep trouble if they don’t tighten up defensively

Just a pathetic two months of defense (especially defensive rebounding) and we finally got the bill tonight.

Makes absolutely no sense that a team that returns every single player from a team that was top 5 in defensive efficiency last year can be so bad this year. We have fallen from 7th in defensive efficiency to 53rd over the past 20 games despite going 19-1 in those games.

I thought (more like hoped) we could flip the switch defensively against quality competition but instead we got absolutely man handled.

We didn’t play particularly well offensively either, we missed a lot of open shots, but I’m not too worried about that. The defense will be the culprit when this team gets KO’d in March if there isn’t a big change in effort on the defensive end.

Yeah I have been very critical of this team since the Florida game in Gainesville. They have been playing very poorly for over a month now. This team has been a huge disappointment with the regression on the defensive end. Barnes seems to be ignoring the glaring flaw.

Tonight wasn’t unexpected once I saw how bad we were on the defensive end in the first 5 minutes but it still doesn’t explain how a team can regress this much defensively with the same personnel.

If there isn’t improvement Barnes will have a lot of explaining to do.

That is a curious drop. Is it that there were so many blowout wins that they lost interest? I haven’t gotten to watch as much UT as I would’ve liked this season. Barnes was ripping into the kids in the post game clips I saw so I would expect a different team this week. He wasn’t being an arse but was clearly taking advantage of the opportunity the loss presents.

There were some lapses late in games in the OOC schedule that dropped them to around 20 but in SEC play they have been awful from the jump defensively in almost every game. Seemingly just trying to get back on offense as soon as possible and trying to outscore teams. When you have a bad night offensively like tonight you have no chance when you can’t stop anybody. Tennessee had literally no chance on the defensive end tonight. It was absolutely pathetic.

Not worried. We still #1 seed. Lose 1-2 more a #2 max.

Need to get that D efficiency in to top 30 before the tournament. Obviously we are going to get a high seed but we cannot let the season be torpedoed by laziness on the defensive end.

You should be very worried about next Saturday at LSU. Prepare thy anus.

No man, Vols are salty good. Agree with you on defense but KY was up, VERY up for that game and it was in their house. That’s basketball, it’s hard to win on the road vs great teams. Tennessee just didn’t have it last night and I thought your guys took some bad shot selection once you got down 10 points.

ETA: Actually, I thought you took some bad shot selection before then. Ky got you out of your game but give them credit, they were fired up, hostile crowd and their defense stepped it up too.

Even if we lose at LSU, which is obviously very possible, getting the defensive efficiency numbers respectable is much more important than the results of individual games in February. I want to win them all but it would be a better sign to lose 65-62 or so than win 95-91. We cannot continue to play this game of trying to outscore people going in to the tournament.

LSU coming. We're the best basketball team in the country. Change my mind.

I’ve seen enough of Tennessee to know you have talent scoring. Again, KY got in your guys heads (along with that hostile crowd) and your shot selection was bad at times as if frustrated. And they were. Your players needed to settle down but that’s what happens @Ky. Tough place to win.

LSU looks like a second weekend team but they have some glaring issues on defense as well.

Yeah we didn’t play well offensively. Bad shot selection as you said and also just a poor shooting night, which happens in basketball. I’m not really concerned about that. We score well enough to win most nights. The defense is what concerns me. Kentucky is good but not elite offensively and they got whatever they wanted all night. It’s a big problem.

Its one game, just like I tell our fans to take it one game at a time.

I agree with you about your defense though but a game like this will have your coaches now more focussed on that issue. Even a 15% improvement will be big.

IMO your bigger issue is rebounding. With the big, physical guys you have across the board you shouldn’t be getting significantly out rebounded.

Mehta, they got UK on a good night. They don't have another loss on their schedule, except UK possibly.
