From an athletics standpoint, it's not where a school is now, but where a school has the potential to be when it comes to expanding the conference.
Today's powerhouses could be tomorrow's doormats. Look at Tennessee, for example. Yesterday's doormats could be today's powerhouses. Compare LSU now to where they were in the early 90's.
Avoid evaluating a school in terms of the present success of programs. Look instead to new markets and new opportunities to increase the exposure and interest in the SEC. The conference is not looking for a flash in the pan. They are looking for a 100 year partner.

UVA would rival Ole Miss, Bama and UGA in the frat rankings.
Ole Miss would have a natural rival in high class tailgating.
UVA would rival State in lack of sports relevance.
I say make it happen.

Those frickers would be so snotty it wouldn't be funny.
They call themselves THE University of Virginia just like Ohio State does tOSU.

The more snobby one is "Mr. Jefferson's University"
A few years ago when they were losing to VT, the student section cheered "That's alright, that's OK, you're gonna work for us someday"

Never heard that one in all my time in VA. That's a good one.
What part of Richmond do you live in? I'm from New Kent County.

I would love to have UVA in the SEC. The only problem is the majority of their students/alumni probably would not welcome the idea of joining the SEC based on the lack of academic prestige compared to the Big10. UVA + UNC is my 1st choice, while UNC + VT or NC State is more realistic.
Also, UVA has elite Soccer and Lacrosse programs--the SEC doesnt compete in these sports... what would UVA do?

Don't know about soccer, but they would just go independent in lacrosse, and it wouldn't make any difference. UNC would too. Another sport for the SEC to win titles in if they got UVA.

Nice. It's an underrated city, imo. It's got its own culture if you get out of the suburbs and into the city itself. The fan is awesome
Edit: But stay well clear of the projects

Richmond in the 90s was a fricking warzone. Murder capital of the country for a few years. It's been cleaned up a lot

UVA is always competitive in the country club sports.
I say bring 'em. Us country club schools (UGA, UF, Bama) could use a good competitor.

My hypothetical best guess for a UVA AD in the SEC would be:
Football similar to Ole Miss. Mediocre most years, a few good years sprinkled in. Wild card is how the Va recruiting base would react to the conference change. They could improve quickly since VT would have trouble recruiting with UVA in that case.
Basketball in the top half of the conference pretty much every year. Somewhere in the 3-5 range usually (4-6 with UNC added as well).
Baseball would be competitive for the conference championship fairly often.
Most other sports would be somewhere between competitive and the frontrunner for the conference championship. Not sure about track, but for sure behind a few SEC schools. The AD at UVA is generally very strong in the non-revenue sports.
