Thought I read that UGA was like the third university founded in the US.

When the University of Georgia was incorporated by an act of the General Assembly on January 27, 1785, Georgia became the first state to charter a state-supported university.

The university was actually established in 1801 when a committee of the board of trustees selected a land site. John Milledge, later a governor of the state, purchased and gave to the board of trustees the chosen tract of 633 acres on the banks of the Oconee River in northeast Georgia.

The University of South Carolina is home to more than 200 years of history and tradition, rising from a single building in 1805 on what would become the heart of the campus, the Horseshoe.

And UF nearly beat LSU. And yet...

and by nearly the same scale, the scale was actually slightly larger for the LSU map. so i actually gave LSU a helping hand.

at nearly the same scale, LSU fits inside UF's campus.

FIFY

Edit: WTF: LSU's campus goes all the way down to Brightside Dr. That map is leaving off almost half the campus lol.

LSU is like a city within a city, and the corps is mapping the 2,000-acre campus using GIS so that when a disaster occurs, the university will have maps electronically available to help guide personnel through the emergency situation and save lives.

Let it go dude. There's got to be something else you can do.

Oh right. Gainesville. Never mind then.

You are correct Georgia looks to be the older of the two, but just by a couple of years.

Georgia was founded in 1785, but didn't hold classes till 1801.

USC was founded in 1801 and held classes in 1805.

Both of them are at their original campus location.

University of Arkansas was founded in 1871 and started classes in 1872 at its current location. The main building (aka Old Main) was completed in 1875 and remains as the oldest building on campus.

So, UGa marks 1785 as its founding, when it didn't open its doors until 1801? UA's founding dates to 1813, but its doors didn't open until 1831. That's the date usually associated with its creation.

I know that. The area directly across the Black Warrior from the Alabama campus is in Tuscaloosa.

And it's private property, and riverfront at that. No way that's going to be sold, and what would be the point of that small area being bought?

Bama was founded as the University of the State of Alabama. I have never found where the name was officially changed to the University of Alabama.

LSU basically had two foundings one in Pineville as LSU (1860) and one in New Orleans as LSU A&M (1874). These two eventually merged in Baton Rouge.

I think Auburn takes the record for most names.

It changed its name in 1831. The University of the State of Alabama was created in 1813.

Unless it's changed recently, the official name of LSU was listed in both English and French.

In French: l'Universite' de l'Etat de la Louisiane

Wasn't "The University of the State of Alabama" just the designation given to the formation and land granting by the Leg.? I was under the impression that they just dropped "of the State" when the doors opened..

That's what I'm saying. When land was set aside in 1813, it was designated as "The University of the State of Alabama". When the doors opened in 1831, it was first referred to as "The University of Alabama".

We have UA.edu and they have UArk.edu, therefore Bama = UA.

The U of A thing isn't a big deal. To me the U of A will always be the University of Arkansas. For you it will be Bama. For others Arizona, Anchorage, etc. Just like the Tigers or Bulldogs for all of the schools that share a common mascot.
