I work in a bank with 100 employees, about 70 are Bama fans, about 24 are Aubbies. Of those only 2 have ever set foot on Auburns campus. 7 are Bama graduates. So that shoots that little theory down in a hurry. All teams have sidewalk fans. The most sucessful attract the most non graduates for fans.
