I'm still wondering how UNC managed to not only skate on the whole phantom department thing, but they've managed to keep their academic reputation in tact.

The investigation is still ongoing and the consequences will be very severe. They are not even close to being out of the woods.

It's pretty amazing how they've managed this.

Because pretty much everybody makes the distinction between "scholars" and "scholar-athletes." None of us expect our favorite team's players to be on the same level as the general population. We might brag about having XX number of Academic All-Americans, but we know, deep down, that usually just means the athlete in question manages to be just a bit above average (as opposed to one the country's elite when talking actual All-Americans) and probably taking a fairly easy course of study. There are exceptions, of course, but the general rule is solid enough that a university's athletic department and the general academic reputation are rarely going to be held to the same standards. I'm sure most Vandy players are bright enough, for instance, but I'm less sure most of them would have been solid takes for the university had they not brought athletic prowess to the table.

unc deserves it for hiring roy williams. I want to say auburn was threatened a while back, or maybe bama fans just made that up.

They deserve to lose the university's accreditation because they hired Roy Williams to be a basketball coach? Jeez.

I think Bama fans made that up. Large state universities aren't losing their accreditation over academic scandals in the AD.

I imagine that this is the type of paper many OM football players write.

Ummm.... I may or may not have a picture of a football player's paper that he wrote for a class. It's about a page and a half long and makes sense, but the grammar is horrendous.

They were put on probation by SACS, but I don't think they were ever in real danger of losing their accreditation. It had more to do with the BOT meddling in university affairs than anything in academia if I recall right.

yes Roy Williams is indeed that bad of a person. They should probably burn kansas to the ground on the basis of them having williams as a former coach.

Here's a piece of it.

"Each year he would move back and forward with one of his parents. Going into his eight grade year, he stated that his guardian took him away from the bad environment in which he lived in."

Not just terrible. He can at least write well enough to put an entire paper together that makes sense. His grammar needs work though.

This is more or less correct. It was back in 2002-03 time frame.

Speaking as someone who once worked with these kids in college, my best guess is he hadn't read enough. It doesn't necessarily have to be Great Literature -- reading a newspaper every day will do. The little errors -- "forward" for "forth" and "eight" for "eighth" especially -- are symptomatic of someone who is working these things out in his head as a form of verbal (technically "oral") communication and then committing the results to paper.

Since you're right, he definitely has a decent enough grasp of writing to formulate complex sentences and adverbial clauses, the procedural issues are an easy but time-consuming fix. I've certainly seen worse.

This illustrates how some schools are immune to the ncaa. It is death penalty worthy but not a damn thing will come of it.

They are actually investigating it. They will probably drag their arse through the investigation for 4-5 years like they always do and then hit them with some major sanctions

Oh definitely. I have a buddy that works in the tutoring department that says this guy busts his arse every day in class and is always on time for tutoring appointments.

Eh. People say that all the time, but the evidence doesn't really bear it out. In this century alone, BCS title winners USC, Bama, FSU, LSU, OU, and Miami (just off the top of my head) have all been hit with sanctions and probations.
