I have seen a couple of folks say Birmingham... and as an Alabaman, I really don't understand the love it is getting. Honestly, Birmingham is a crap hole

Greenville, SC.
Eh, not a bad city and close to some great outdoor activities, but it's kind of sterile to me (just like Charlotte).
I'd rank Charleston over Greenville easily, and possibly Columbia too.
...although Greenville is the home of the best damn mayo ever created.

I travel to Nashville regularly and do not understand the love for it. It feels like a claustrophobic Charlotte to me.

There's is nothing Southeast about Miami other than it's in the state of Florida. It's more Caribbean than southern.

Underrated growing town. It has exploded recently. It's not a "best city in the Southeast" caliber town yet, but it could be in 15 or 20 years.
They have been putting in that new exit to the north the past few months, bringing the BG exits from the interstate to 5 or 6 now. Amazing the growth of that town in the past 25 years or so. 3 things help greatly
1) State university in city (WKU)
2) Merged government (LEX and LOU are only other two in the state
3) Houchens Industries based there. As they are a multi billion dollar corporation most have never heard (so large they bought a large brokerage firm a decade or so ago just to manage their business and employees) that is about 20% family owned and 80% employee owned so HQ and business not likely to ever leave BG or the state of KY. I think they have close to 20K employees and are one of the largest ESOP companies in the US.
Convenience stores like Jr's and Tobacco Shoppe)
Supermarkets (Houchen's, IGA, Save-A-Lot, Mad Butcher, Food Giant, Market Place, Piggy Wiggly, and Whites Fresh Food)
Construction companies
Recycling companies
Insurance companies
Manufacturing companies
Warehouse companies
Brokerage company - Hilliard Lyons from PNC Financial
Their name is on the new stadium for WKU and have been responsible for several buildings at WKU and UL.

That is NW Arkansas in a nutshell. It is a great place to settle down, raise a family, and still be able to put money back every month to retire on.
If you are talking about places to go and do things, a vacation destination, then New Orleans and pretty much anywhere in South Carolina would be at the top of my list. The thing is there is no great shortage of great places to visit in the South.
Hell even Memphis can be a fun town to visit.

They really need to make more improvements to their interstate system. But there are a lot of things to do in Nashville and you can walk almost anywhere downtown and feel safe.
It sounds like I work for the Chamber of Commerce, but they have put a lot of money into downtown. Food, music, sites, sports, celebrity-sightings. It's nice

I mean I guess it's not bad if you can afford to wall yourself off from the minorities and poor folks though.
You realize the best parts of Atlanta are both filled with minorities and/or literally bordering mass areas of minorities, right?
Anyone who thinks the nicest/best/richest parts of Atlanta are somewhere in Cobb County or North Fulton automatically is disallowed from ever discussing Atlanta again.

The movie industry wouldn't go to Memphis or Knoxville no matter how many tax breaks you gave. Do you not think TN has offered tax breaks?
Proof? The film industry has been in a little place called Wilmington, NC for many years before it was in Georgia.

Really? How many major sporting events are in Nashville as opposed to Atlanta? Want to go down the list?
Do I really need to list these for you? For a city that is 1/5 the metro size they have hosted many NCAA basketball tournaments, have an NHL team and an arena that is far superior to Phillips in construction and location.
quote:
Care to compare how many corporate national or regional HQ's are in Atlanta compared to any other SE town? It ain't close.
No, I don't. We all know there are more, which has no relevance on how "nice" one perceives a city. Dallas and Houston both have more, are they nicer? No
quote:
This shows how little you know about Atlanta. And that's pretty typical of most who've never spent any time here. Atlanta has more airports than any city in the SE, plus the busiest. Want to compare the number of airports Atlanta has to the rest of the SE? With the completion of the Mercedes-Benz stadium, Atlanta will arguably have some of the best sporting venues in the nation, much less the SE. Atlanta has some of the best restaurants in the SE, best museums, best tourism venues, best hiking, biking, green spaces, universities, etc. Name me one city in the SE that has more of all of the afore-mentioned than Atlanta and we'll compare item-by-item.
I lived in Atlanta for a decade. Atlanta has no second major commercial Airport. Smaller aiports like DeKalb Peachtree are not relative when it comes to large commercial operations like a Delta or United. Chicago has Midway, Houston has Hobby, DC has Dulles and Reagan, etc. This is widely known information.

I'm not arguing any of this, I don't know why you think I am. I'm actually moving back, I love Atlanta. I just live in reality about the place. The area doesn't even have a regional public transportation system. Who cares about the football stadium? Cities build stadiums all the time, like I'm going to choose a city to live in or call the best because of a fricking football stadium, good grief.

Berea KY
Not the biggest city in the south but may be one of the be sty for quality of life if you like a combination of access to big cities with a home in a groovy little town.
Until the last year or two the local college had the biggest endowment in the state (bigger then Uk / UL / WKU) and it was free to the students who attended college there. Proving you can provide free college education if you do it right.

Uh what? Southeast is a geographical term, therefor that would encompass anything in it's location, which would include Miami.
Culturally, you have a point there, everybody knows that.

Atlanta has more film infrastructure than any place in the world other than Los Angeles. It was spurned by the tax credits, but over the last 5-10 years it has created it's own ecosystem that has spurned hundred million dollar facilities, thousands of local sub-contractors, etc. More of the Box Office Top 100 movies in 2016 were filmed in Atlanta than any place in the world. It's far eclipsed a little bump from the tax credits.

It has now, but it started with the tax push. I won't argue this at all.

My favorite southern cities, excluding Atlanta, are
1. Charleston, SC
2. Savannah, GA
3. Asheville, NC
4. Chattanooga, TN
5. New Orleans, LA
Nashville is fine, but it all feels a bit like Disneyworld to me. As much as I hate to say it, Knoxville has become a fantastic little downtown. The Tennessee Theatre, the river, restaurants. They've done fantastic work there. Athens is also great, as is Greenville, SC.

Yep, definitely. But it eclipsed the multiple other states with the tax push because Georgia has such a great mix that appealed to movie groups and then actors
For movie producers and execs
- Mountains, beaches, rural, urban all literally within a 3 hour drive
- Climate is conducive to filming year round
- A highly educated and diverse populace with fantastic technical colleges
- An airport that allows direct flights to almost anywhere in North America and most major cities in the world
- Low cost of business, living, etc
For actors, Atlanta is a great place because they can live their lives and people don't bother them. Unbeknownst to most here, in-town Atlanta is fantastic and filled with wonderful old neighborhoods, and most actors that end up working here for long periods bring their family along and many have asked to come back. They can live in the Highlands, Midtown or O4W and go eat dinner and the most bother they get is a head nod.

Thats exactly right. You can find almost any geographic location in the state except for desert. Quite a bit of the films shot there aren't even set there.
