Yea you’re correct.

But when I think of college football, I usually think about post leather helmets.

And the big 10 is impressive but you shouldn’t include Penn State.

And the point I was trying to make is that when they won all of those “championships” the big 10 was not several teams deep.

Two team conferences was my point.

But you are correct.

Well you are still wrong

The big 10 had 7 different teams finished ranked in the top 10 while they were winning those championships

The 1940s and 50s

Even the 60s the big 10 was deep

You have to take out Penn State and Nebraska

So remove Penn State and Nebraska....
And let’s count post leather helmet years.

How Championships does the big 10 have vs. the SEC?

What? Being in the BIG now had nothing to do with their
NC's and PSU,Neb,OSU and UM all woulda knocked each out
of the picture in many of their NC years had they all been in the BIG

quote:

3. SEC – 31 National Championships

I would also delete A&M and ArKY but add the NC's won by GT while they were in the SEC

Top to bottom SEC has always been the best conference in college football.

I think you're basically wrong. The SEC didn't take off as the dominant conference until the 2000s, and that was because of large-scale demographic and economic improvements in the South coupled with parallel declines in the Midwest. This process had its beginnings in the 1990s and was in full force by the mid 2000s.

I'll start my argument in the 70s, because that's when SEC football was (fully) integrated. It is not even worth discussing the sport in the same way before that.

1) The SEC was a one-team league in the 1970s. Alabama literally won 8 of 10 SEC championships that decade.

2) The SEC was essentially a zero-team league for MOST of the 1980s. Yes, Georgia was good in the early 80s, but that was because of one player and they fell off dramatically once he moved on. Yes, there were some other good teams (Auburn, Florida, LSU) -- but they were plagued by probation and/or inconsistency.

3) The SEC became a three-team league in the 90s, with Florida winning half of the league championships in that decade. Alabama and Tennessee won the rest. Again, this was because the demographic and economic changes that would propel the SEC to the top were taking root during this time period.

4) The SEC truly took off in the 2000s, largely because the demographics had changed and we had much more talent than anyone else. It took a while for people to realize this (see the LSU vs. USC debate in 2003 or Auburn 2004). The SEC had 3 teams win 5 national championships in that decade, and a 4th team (Auburn) got slighted in 2004 (see my above point).

5) The SEC has essentially turned into a one-team league again in the 2010s, bringing us full circle with Alabama. Yes -- Auburn and LSU were good early in the decade. Yes -- Georgia is good now. But none match Alabama's success.

I’m really not trying to move the goalposts...

But you need to take Maryland out also.

I should have been more specific with my initial comment.

So.
How many post leather helmet era championships does the big 10 have minus, Penn State, Nebraska, and Maryland, and Chicago.?

And when those teams and years that remain,
How many times was the conference more than two teams deep?

That was my point.
My fault for not being more specific.
Most on this board are younger guys that don’t care about the actual history.

I’m an older guy and I really only think in terms of since I was born.

The SEC wasn't even two teams deep in the 70s and 80s.

You are missing my point.

If Bama won the conference 20 years in a row that doesn’t make the SEC a one team conference if there are several other very good teams in the conference.

So at least we are admitting that the only comparison to the SEC is the big 10.

1) If there were other teams who were very good on a regular basis, they would manage to win the conference a few times.

2) Even if I granted your point (which I don't), shouldn't it also apply to the Big Ten? Seems like you are applying two different standards of evaluation.

The 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s the big 10 was a deeper league

The SWC was arguably a better conference than the SEC in the 1980s. Six teams won the conference championship in that decade.
