Fine. Out of the 119 or so Div 1 teams ranked by the recruiting services, Oregon State might have slighty above average talent.

Average Star Rankings Per Recruiting Class (Scout.com)

Oregon State
2004 -- 2.36 stars (#39 in nation)
2005 -- 2.53 stars (#43 in nation)
2006 -- 2.60 stars (#37 in nation)
2007 -- 2.45 stars (#51 in nation)
2008 -- 2.72 stars (#45 in nation)

Utah
2004 -- 1.59 stars (#80 in nation)
2005 -- 2.05 stars (#72 in nation)
2006 -- 2.00 stars (#78 in nation)
2007 -- 2.29 stars (#66 in nation)
2008 -- 2.87 stars (#35 in nation)

[Oregon State] Losing a "down to the wire game" at Utah, whom lsumatt has tagged as a BCSCG sleeper, is a much worse loss than any of LSU's?

Yes. Much, much worse.

You could use that to say their is anti-Pac 10 bias in the major polls. But that is a lot different from claiming there is a pro-SEC bias.

You at it with Ruffalo again. I hope you are ready for a long fight. This dude never gives up. He spends all his day trying to justify USC's loss to Oregon St. Spends all day trying to convince everyone on this board of the pac 1's so called strength. Its downright laughable.

Dear Fighting Tigers,
The "Star System" is not a valid measure of actual talent, but instead, a measure of potential talent.

Not all potential talent is realized, and often you'll find that potential talent is underrated, and players bloom AFTER going to college.

Give the two-stars a chance, and put away your meaningless "stars chart".

no need to justify the ore. st loss. It happened! As did wyoming-tenn, ole miss v florida, and don't tell me ole miss is better than ore st. UL mon--ala. teams have bad days and that's it. On an earlier post someone mentioned that USC fans should be getting tired of losing each year to a very inferior team. I AM!

I almost spit coffee on my keyboard with that one. Of course you have the highest ranked of all the above. Look at the crap you are put up against to get your numbers.

Don't. You'll ruin it.

If you don't think USC's defense is extremely physical, you don't know much about college football or you're using controlled substances in
a less than legal manner.

Leach also has the animatronic pirate skeleton. You can add that to the list.

Here's a pretty funny Jim Rome take on Mike Leach, his dating advice, and recruiting.

Florida couldn't get by Ole Miss.

Hell, Oregon State's better than Ole Miss.

So that, like just about everything else Jaydope posts is bollocks.

So Oregon State just happened to get all the Jacob Hesters of the world on their team, right?

And the star rankings are more accurate than you realize. Here is an excellent 2008 article by Athlon analyzing the star rankings and concluding that "recruiting rankings really do matter...recruiting rankings are pretty good indicators of how a prospect will turn out." -- LINK

Regardless, I just showed you the star rankings of Oregon State and Utah in an attempt to show you the reality that Oregon State and Utah are not the elite powerhouses that you think they are.

I doubt that coaches and sportswriters worry too much about the opinions of the recruiting services when they form their own opinions of who the best teams and players are when they vote in the polls, vote for the All-conference teams, etc.
