Tommy Rees from an ND alum perspective

I am a recent graduate of ND, live in South Bend, and went to every home game this last year.
No, Tommy Rees is not universally beloved at ND, but he is also not universally hated. The beginning of the season, he was fairly unpopular (losing to Marshall and Stanford at home because of offensive ineptitude will do that) and you had people saying very negative things about Rees. The team averaged 23.7 points per game in the first 6 games. However, as the season went on and the offense continued to mesh, people more or less were fine with him. ND offense scored 38.7 points per game in the last 7 games. Finished the season scoring 31.8 ppg for 42nd in the nation.
My opinion having watched Rees closely last 3 years: he's not a bad coordinator. He's able to sometimes be creative and is definitely growing and learning. I would take him 10/10 times over LSU OCs like Cam Cameron and Jake Peetz. But sometimes he makes boneheaded decisions. Our offense was definitely not the strength of the team this year. IMO, Rees was a young guy who was a good coordinator when he was just gameplanning BK's vision; after BK left, Rees just looked lost for a good while. I mean idk, but 42nd in the nation just doesn't scream "Alabama OC #1 candidate" to me. I think Rees could do a good job under Saban and learn a TON but... as an ND fan, I have to admit I did think "wow we can go out and finally hire a real OC now!" when I first read the news!
Tl;dr- ND fans are split on the guy, but probably lean negative to mediocre. Almost no one here thinks him a top-tier OC. Take it for what it's worth.

Long story short…Saban is washed up and no longer has his pick of coordinators. It’s Kirby’s world now and we’re all just living in it.

Sounds a lot like Kendal Briles with 'cute' play calling at times.

He hasn’t been hired has he?

Appreciate the perspective. Seems to line up with most I've read.

He did lose his QB early in the year. Not like Buchner was a world beater but the backup Pyne progressed throughout the year

As a guy without a dog in the fight, gonna be fun to eat the popcorn here.
If Bama hires him, fully expect LSU fans to laugh at Bama just like Bama fans laughed at LSU's Kelly hire.
Side note: Kelly tried to take Rees with him to BR, but Rees stayed put in Indiana.

It's not like Pyne had no playing experience. Pyne played considerably last year and even won us some games. No explanation for the huge step backward in the beginning of the season (esp against Stanford and Marshall) other than bad game-planning. And that falls on Rees. And it was so frustrating watch us score only 27 on a piss poor USC defense even when Pyne WAS playing amazingly. Again, that says poor game-planning or play-calling to me. Comes down to Rees. He was mediocre last year compared to what had done in previous years with similar if not worse talent.

In the Clemson game there was 2 non offensive TDs, and UNC had a god awful defense and BC sucks.
They got better as the year went on no doubt, at least they were performing they way they should against bad teams finally and not laying eggs against terrible Marshall and Stanford teams. Maybe he did finally turn a corner. But I think Bama could de better. Just my opinion though. Hiring him wouldn't really strike fear into me. It could work out though, but it's still a gamble.

Yep, I agree 100% with this post. Rees may end up being a good coordinator under Saban but... it absolutely is a gamble and not a home run hire by any means.

Wait, I’ve been gone. So Bama isn’t hiring Kliff Kingsbury anymore?

Kirby and Kelly will get the best. By next year Kirby will be challenged to get past Kelly! BK will have his 1st natty in next 2-3 years
