Not at all true.
Arky and SC were basically last on the list of 3 each for each division

One of the headlines was about Arkansas being the 11th member of the SEC. It would be fitting for the 11th member of the SEC to win the SEC championship in 2011, the 20th year since expansion I believe.

That's not true. Like I posted on the CEboard, the SEC was originally looking for a 14 team conference.
There weren't even divisions back then to "add" to.
The divisions were determined months after Carolina and Arkansas joined.
Nobody knew how they would divide it up. They looked at several scenarios before deciding on the current East/West set up.

several years ago i looked up old sports illustrated articles about it but there wasn't too much of interest. i only remember a couple of points that stood out
-the reporting said arkansas would leave the swc after 1990 and compete as an independent in '91. instead, we ended up staying in the swc for that season.
-this happened at about the same time penn state announced it was joining the big 10. frank broyles had a quote saying that a consolidation into 4 16-team superconferences was coming. 20 years later, people are still speculating that.

Never knew about Arkansas considering going independent. Those are some interesting facts, thanks for sharing.

From what I read, Texas was wanted the most but politics weren't taking them and A&M apart.
When Arky voted in favor of the move they asked them to join and the list went down to FSU, Miami and US.
FSU was the front runner, but Bowden came out and said no, and some reports that FSU refused to be in the same conference as Florida.
Miami wasn't as enthused and wanted Big East to improve their Basketball team.
So we were kind of last resort on that end.
I shouldn't have said 3 from each, but from what I've heard around It was as if the SEC really wanted Texas the most.

Frank Broyles had an interview where he discussed it at length. Arkansas and Carolina were the two who were most interested in expansion and kept the topic alive until the SEC was ready. We were always considering a jump, either SEC or Big 8. Broyles was right in understanding that Texas politics would not look out for Arkansas if and when anything went down.
He also said that they SEC wanted up to 6 teams when they first started talking expansion. It was fluid, and they didn't know for sure what response they would get from the schools they targeted.
He said that Texas A&M and Texas wanted to go, but knew they were hamstrung by local politics. But Arkansas, Texas, and Texas A&M were kind of a package deal. It was never "Oh we wanted Texas, but we'll settle for Arkansas and Carolina".
I think if A&M and Texas would have come, the SEC would have gone to 14.
Carolina and Arkansas were just the two who were willing at the time so we wound up with a 12 team league.

Ya I feel ya, but ya we were the most Willing (us and Ya'll).
It's not really smack, but kind of what our fans say around here, that the only reason we are in the SEC is because FSU said no.
A lot of the older Gamecock fans also thank vince dooley for throwing our name out there and really helping us join.
I was like 2 years old when this all happened though. So this just going from what older fans have told me.

From the article link:
This is how it was being perceived at the time. But I think it was more all 3 had an invite, and they hoped that when Arkansas jumped, the Texas schools would see the SWC wasn't viable any longer and follow.

Should Arkansas join, it might open the door for SWC brethren Texas and Texas A&M to be considered by the SEC. Texas' big television market is attractive to the SEC.

The final Southwest Conference game in Razorback Stadium was played before nearly 8,000 empty seats, and among the fans who attended, the most impassioned chant was " SEC! SEC!" in anticipation of the Razorbacks' controversial departure for the Southeastern Conference next season. This was a wretched afternoon, with temperatures in the 20's and snow flurries. It was also an untidy one, with each team scoring a safety. And a sad one. "My daddy always told me, when a friend dies you wear a coat and tie," said Baylor coach Grant Teaff afterward. "So I wore a coat and tie."
I was at that Baylor game. See, I remember it being horribly cold, so cold your feet hurt inside your shoes.
I remember being miserable and not wanting to be there. I was 14.
But I have no memory of that being our last SWC game, or giving a shite either way.

Thanks man. Craig O'neill was the king of prank calls in the late 80's early 90's in central arkansas.
Here's another of his famous calls.

I can relate. In '91, I mostly remember being very eager to start SEC play, so that last season meant very little to me.
