If you can exclude boosters then true market value is sane and workable.
It's the excess above a realistic market value that becomes both the inducement and pay for play.

LOL at your wish post. Cat is out of the bag. Any attempts to curtail NIL will now be considered exploitive, racist, etc….

There are people on this very board that fully support unlimited NIL deals and think players should make as much as they can.

Toothless NCAA helped create this clusterfrick and for some inexplicable reason you seem to think they are going to fix it??

Good god.

That’s why Texas 8-4 has such a poor class right now. They know that the whole “the guys in those suites are going to be paying you a lot of money” BS is about to be not acceptable. Saban has nailed this whole thing from the beginning

everybody knew he was right. Was listening to Cowherd last week and Cowherd had raked Saban over the coals saying he was worried about his dynasty collapsing, wouldn't get any more players, called Saban a hypocrite and that players should be allowed to make what they can, blah blah then Kirk Ferentz says the same thing Saban did and Colin lauded him for "standing up" for whats right. I almost fell out of my chair. Colin said "if you are an employee of a company and you give the company 20 hours a week, you shouldn't be compensated like the CEO". Then Colin went on to say inducing recruits is wrong, there needs to be cap on NIL and the limit the transfers.
I saw then what I already knew. If Saban says it, its wrong and he's evil. Anybody else talks about NIL and common sense and rationale come into play. The price for being the King I guess.

Don't get mad because you haven't earned one yet. You may say something funny one day?

It is downright unamerican to tell someone that they can't use their name, etc, to earn money.

If it is reined in, it will be due to the market deciding it's not worth it to dish out big contracts.

It's no different than the guidelines that have existed in the NCAA for years when it comes to thinks like giving the player employment.

Well my whole point was that guideline was nonsensical.

You fix it by having a high school draft because these kids do not want to go to college to learn in the first place and the whole thing has been a ruse for decades.

OP is an idiot. We’ve been paying players behind the scenes for years. Look at our record with the NCAA. Recruits are simply being told they cannot play behind our #1 class. Grow a brain, and realize we will do just fine. We will even get some of those kids that “de-committed” back …

Not remotely worried. It’s time to play football!

No way they can put the genie back in the bottle. It would be called racists and discriminatory.

This is a self correcting problem as the golden eggs being laid will soon kill the goose that's laying them. Either some drastic changes will be made to NIL or college football will cease to exist.

Close. Regardless of whether it is a ruse or not you're not going to be able to dictate ONE school where a kid can play ball. I see something more along the lines of a talent cap of sorts. If you could create a workable system of consensus ratings for high school seniors you could put a cap on how many 5-star, 4-star, and 3-star kids a school could sign each year.

Why this could work:
1. No NIL limits - so consistent with SCOTUS ruling
2. A 5 star kid still has the opportunity to go to any school that recruits him (within their cap limit), similar to now.
3. Added bonus - brings some measure of parity to college ball.

Why this might not work:
1. Saban would hate it (using him as the face of all major programs that consistently recruit well).
2. How deep do you go? Just P5?
3. How to come up with consensus rankings.

Being a big fan of capitalism, normally I would agree with you but these payments are not necessarily market-driven. Much of NIL money will come from wealthy alums with a purely emotional motive.

There's a way you can do it.

You have a high school draft. If a kid wants to bypass that he can, but he can't play sports at the university of his choice for a year.

That puts a big fork in the road for a HS kid that wants to get paid. Do I go to Oregon now and get to the NFL in 3 years or do I wait, go to Bama and not see the field until next year?

That may alleviate the problem somewhat, but you'll still get a lot of kids willing to sit a year while collecting NIL money and play for Bama. A quasi-redshirt year if you will.

I agree in part with your last statement, but that well is only so deep, and are those folks going to keep ponying up after getting burned a few times?
