From what I understand, the profit is turned over to the university and is not kept by athletics. At least that's the case for LSU.
Yeah, I'm not positive how it all works.

The Ohio State University Department of Athletics sponsors 36 fully funded varsity teams - 17 for women, 16 for men and three co-educational. The department is committed to providing its more than 1,000 student-athletes with the finest in academic and athletics support in order to ensure a quality and life-enhancing experience. The Department of Athletics is completely self-supporting and receives no university monies, tax dollars or student fees. In Fiscal Year 2010-11, the Department of Athletics will transfer back to the University more than $30 million in assessments, including $15 million in grant-in-aid costs.
Is this how most universities work? Or is this more of a rarity?

I wonder what tOSU's net profit would be if it didn't support 36 varsity sports with our football program.
Baseball is an expensive sport.

Not coincidentally WalMart's in Alabama shattered previous years sales records.

This means you are failures if you don't make a BCS game every year

Here's some commentary (including about tOSU) on how many work. From yesterday's TMQ:

The University of Alabama - #1 in net profit of all NCAA schools

That article is incorrect.
quote:
Recently the NCAA reported that only 14 Division I-A programs clear a profit, while no college or university in the United States has an athletic department that is financially self-sustaining. Nobody in Division I -- not Alabama, not Auburn, not Oklahoma, nobody -- has an athletic department that pays its own way.
LINK
He references Oregon as an example, and Oregon is not self-sustaining. Neither is Alabama or Auburn or Florida. But, schools like LSU and Ohio State are.
Any amount other than 0 in revenue for "Student fees", "Direct state or other government support", or "Direct institutional support" means the athletic department is not self-sustaining.

Man, UGA has fallen off nicely. Guess that's what a 7 - 5 and 6 - 6 season will do for you. Still second in profitability though, as a result of basketball (needed) upgrades and new athletic offices/training rooms. So we gots that sh*t going for us.
Oh, and the third most valuable NCAA franchise per Forbes, so that's nice as well.
I guess.
Getting a little pukey thinking about 6 - 6 considering that.
Getting a lot pukey actually.

A note on the "profit" thing (I'm the guy who wrote the piece being mentioned) - I really wouldn't put much stock in that as all, which I say in the post. Yes, the schools report revenue and expenses, and the difference makes up the "profit", but you can't know what expenses of School A are paid by the "university" or a foundation when School B might pay them from "athletics" and stuff like that.
Auburn spent $90 million on $92 million in revenue while Bama spent $85 million on $129 million in revenue? Clearly not apples to apples.
But the Bama revenue jump is pretty staggering. I'm just happy LSU is one of the programs that's still keeping up (somewhat).

That link does include "expenses paid for by university and third parties", without looking at their actual audit, I don't know what this really is. These two totaled $30 million for tOSU which shows a loss for that year.

That should be plenty of enough money for Alabama to buy out Jim McElwain's contract. Or pay for another mercenary coach after Saban leaves.

I can't imagine any scenario where 24% growth is sustainable for any school.

Yep. It is just continuing women depending on men to pay for everything they want.

This is why its so hilarious when you hear people bitch about coaches' salaries. Saban is massively underpaid. We've just been printing money the last few years, and enrollment is way up. Everyone loves a good bandwagon.
6M a year (the highest in the country) is not underpaid
