From 1995-2001, Tennessee was 73-14 (.839) with two SEC championships and a national championship.
From 2002-2008, Tennessee was 57-32 (.640) with no championships to speak of.
There is a clear decline past 2001. And it didn't get any better after 2008 as we all well know.
Similarly, from 1990-1996, Alabama was 70-16-1 (.810) with a SEC championship and a national championship. From 1997-2003, Alabama was 45-40 (.529) with an SEC title. Just because we won an SEC championship in '99 doesn't take away from the fact that we were clearly on the decline after Stallings retired at the end of the '96 season.
The same is true for Tennessee and their two SEC title appearances in 2004 and 2007.

Since when did I ever argue that it was? I said in my OP that Tennessee is only just now recovering from the fallout from that game. I never said their downfall was caused by the game itself.
