The SEC adds small rigs to games because the league is so deep.

If left to a perfect system(Doesn't exist yet) a lot of outcomes would end up differently.

The rigs are small nudges of influence trying to create the perfect blend of playoff cases to be made.

If they allowed this league to really devour each other the playoff yield would average lower.

On one hand they built a juggernaut of next level talent

On the other hand, the SEC is too far beyond the rest of the CFB world.

9-3 SEC teams are title contenders in every other conference most years, but a 9-3 (insert random sec school) looks worse on paper than say an 11-1 BYU

That is why everyone is going to have to stop judging college football teams on W&L’s and start looking at other criteria such as strength of schedule and strength of a conference. It’s just to easy for a Big 10 team to have an undefeated or 1 loss record at the end of the year.

The system is jacked.

Its maybe not fixable actually. There are 130+ D1 programs and counting.

The only way to find actual balance is a culling of the herd on this level.. and then a restructuring of the conferences. Political shitestorm waiting to happen.

D1 CFB is actually a mess when you step back on it.

I was listening to Joel Klatt on some show the other day and he said he had heard talk of college football moving to a points system similar to what the NHL uses.

There are 32 teams in the NHL. The is an East and West conference with either 2 or 4 divisions per conference. 16 playoff spots. During the regular season teams earn 2 point for a win and 0 for a loss. If the game goes into overtime I think both teams earn a point if I’m remembering right. The eventual winner may get a bonus point. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong on that but it is something similar. The top 3 teams in each division gets a playoff spot I think and then the points system kicks in to determine the wild cards. Anyway he was talking a system similar to that has been talked about for use in college football.

Yes. You've encapsuled the NHL point system correctly, but it would still reward cupcake conferences with no Strength of Schedule element.

Say what you will about Eli Drinkwitz, and much has been said, bit I encourage anyone looking for a better way, to listen to his whole take on a 30 team playoff, not the structure so much, but the part about CFB being grounded in a regional draw, and subjecting the great game that it is, into major chaos even further, if teams start de emphazing football, as they have no chance at decent post season and fan interest dwindles. This will occur as several schools will be relegated to farm systems in effect for the SEC & B1G. His idea would protect the game for the nation and give all teams a chance to prove it in the field, to determine their destiny. I'm not saying I agree entirely , BUT...It's worth a read.
