Clemson is the team that doesn't belong. Should have never guaranteed all 5 conference champs a spot. If they play their way in the 12, fine. If they don't they should be out 100%. That needs to be the first change they make next year along with making the byes go to 1-4.

SOS is important but you have to have even records for it to come into effect. Bama having 3 losses null and voided the SOS variable.

We will have several chances to test this hypothesis.

Georgia (SOS #1) will play the winner of Notre Dame (SOS #59)/Indiana (SOS #67). Notre Dame and Indiana both have a better record than Georgia. I don’t think this will save them from the asswhipping they will receive.

Boise State (SOS #78) will play the winner of Penn State (SOS #30)/SMU (SOS #57). Boise has a better record than either Penn State or SMU. Penn State/SMU may be close but I think Penn State will win. They will likely then kill Boise.

Arizona State (SOS #62) will play the winner of Texas (SOS #20)/Clemson (SOS #35). ASU has a better record than Clemson and the same as Texas. Texas likely will have more trouble with Clemson than ASU.

I may be wrong, but I think we and the committee are going to get a tutorial on why strength of schedule matters.

One of the teams that received an auto bye has the worst SOS of any playoff team and another has the third worst. I think everyone will learn a lot on seeding versus strength of schedule.

Notre Dame played the biggest farce of a schedule. They basically played Boise State's schedule without Oregon on it.

4 G5 teams + Purdue/FSU/Stanford who are 3 of the worst P4 teams

They also played G Tech without Haynes King and Virginia at home.

3 "toughest" opponents... Louisville (at home), TAMU and USC.

And their defense is very sub par and hit and miss.

Their defense was very young. They only had 3 returning starters. Three of the new starters were first year players. They struggled some early. But they got much better the second half of the year. Despite early struggles, they finished the year with the 8th best ranked defensive efficiency in the country. They finished 4th in the SEC in scoring defense despite the early struggles. Neither of those are “very sub par” as you say.

Here is how many points the Alabama defense gave up by game You can see the improvement the second half of the season. If your defense can hold your opponent to 17 points or less now days that is very good. They did that in only three of their first six games. They did it in five of their last six games.

WKU: 0
USF: 16
Wisconsin: 10
Georgia: 34
Vandy: 35
USCe: 25
Tennessee: 24
Missouri; 0
LSU: 13
Mercer: 7
OU: 17
Auburn; 14

No, the Alabama defense was pretty salty by the end of the year.
