Was Bear a racist? Or is his only crime that he was white?

I'd love to see them add a statue of Wilbur Jackson and Wendell Hudson

It's almost as if you think The Progressive Race Mob cares about facts and logic. That's quaint.

I was writing my last post when you posted this. Really, any SEC fan other than a KY one grandstanding about integration is just kind of a moron. And I'll give a slight nod to UT for being a little ahead of the curve as well.

Would be awesome. Perhaps a rare opportunity today for everyone to get on board with a statue.

Yep - that was a fantastic move by Byrne. Well deserved

The virus has thrown everyone off their game. It will probably be a month or two into football season before folks are up to speed.

In 1970, Alabama was one of the few football programs that had an all-white roster. Bryant argued with critics who said he was a racist by saying he didn't recruit African-American player because the social climate of the time didn't allow it. Behind the scenes, however, Bryant was often cited as using racial slurs. And, it made sense to the coach at that time. Bryant was born and raised in the depression-era south, where he was exposed to deep seeded racism.
From whence did this quote come from?
Sylvester Croom "Coach Bryant didn't have a racist bone in his body."

The same place The Progressive Mob gets ALL their 30 second history lessons. From a highly, reputable, unimpeachable internet article written by some historically-illiterate dude in a Che' T-shirt that lives in his Mom's basement that is only a semester away from his Queer Studies degree and then his big job making 31,000 a year starting shite in the streets for a Community Organization group.

Right, because he realized the black athlete would help him win

Thanks for the answer. Seems like, as we've seen all too frequently, he's being judged unfairly by the contemporaneous opinion some hold today.

I'd venture a guess that the coaches had little effect on this. And to be honest, how many of us are willing to stick our necks out today to speak out on issues of race? Not many bc we don't want to be fired. That was probably a similar reason why Bear stayed mum on it, too.

I'm pretty sure he realized that before he actually did it. Based on conversations from guys who went elsewhere, he was very aware of what he'd be bringing the first black athlete into. Right or wrong, it was clear to those around him he didn't want to do it before he thought the people of the state were ready for it.
The guy tried to integrate at Kentucky - he knew that black kids could help him win long before he integrated.

“They told me no,” Bryant said to Phillips. “So for years, I used to recommend all these great black players to schools up North."
