Texas A&M left for a better conference. Texas thought they could carry the big 12 with Oklahoma. I remember Texas thinking the SEC network would fail compared to the longhorn network and they would be better off after half the conference left to get away from them. Once Texas realized they had destroyed another conference and were getting left behind, they came begging to follow Texas A&M’s lead.

Texas OTOH had just had a decade of 10 win seasons, playing for two titles. It had the new cash cow Longhorn Network. No reason to give that up. Sure, it ended up tanking, but the money was still green and Texas ended up in the SEC anyway with its 3 rivals while A&M did frick all with a 12 year head start.
