It might have had to so with several factors.
For starters, A&M sent nearly its entire student body to war for 30 years beginning at the date you reference.
Speed up to 1970ish--after the Ags have fought and died for even the lowest form of American scum: Arkansans--and you're like 7 years into the post-mandatory-military-participation-all-male policy that hindered A&M for decades.
As you can imagine that took a little while to rectify.
But since around 1980 A&M has been chugging along just fine. In the 90s it became a world class institution. And now it's now one the country's ten largest universities. What you're currently seeing are the natural results that flow from these advances. Sure, back-to-back poor hires stymied the end-game. But alas it's now upon us.
A&M is on the precipice of becoming a perennial blueblood. Hope everyone is ready.

Aggies don't lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those that do. That will make it difficult to win in athletics. A&M holds itself to higher standards than most of its competition.

I was surprised to learn their national titles all came before 1940. I know they are a top program in terms of all-time wins and tradition. Why haven't the Aggies won more recent titles? Pre-Sumlin, did the A&M culture offend top players? What is the deal?
It's simple.
All of the A&Ms and Military academies had a huge prewar advantage of being all male and the best draws for the best athletes. .This was especially true in The South. West Point, Navy, Ga Tech. Clemson A&M, Texas A&M. etc.,
Almost all of those, et al, have slipped since WWII, most because they no longer draw the best athletes and/or they were forced to go coed.

I guess Johnny Football didn't learn this during orientation.
