Harper Lee dropped out of Alabama's law school only to go on and write the greatest novel of the 20th century a decade later. (At least she claims to have done so).
Speaking of Harper Lee, I do a lot of work in the Monroeville area where Lee grew up and Truman Capote spent much of his childhood. They happen to be having their annual "To Kill a Mockingbird" festivities this weekend.
On the subject of history/literature, John Hendricks, the founder and CEO of The Discovery Channel and TLC, attended Alabama for a while before eventually finishing his degree at UAH(Alabama-Huntsville).

The Auburn University Chapel was a Civil War Field Hospital during the war. It is said to be haunted by the ghost of a man who lost his leg in the war.

Oh, and there are tunnels on almost every modern University Campus. That's where all the steam pipes, water pipes, telecom, etc. are run, allowing for easy maintenance
Exactly. Nothing special.
At Ole Miss, if they catch you in the tunnels, you get hauled into jail.

During the civil war Ole Miss ordered a new telescope for our observatory. It was delivered by train and stolen by union invaders who then sent it to the University of Michigan. To this day, in one of their old observatories, it remains with the 'University of Mississippi'
FALSE FALSE FALSE
It ended up at Northwestern. And the bit about it being "stolen" isn't true either. The larger glass lens for the telescope (which, at the time, was the largest glass lens in the United States) wasn't yet completed. A glassmaker in Chicago was making it but the Civil War broke out, so they never ended up shipping it to Mississippi. Northwestern bought it.
There's a letter writing campaign that goes on to this day where Ole Miss alumni write to Northwestern begging them to please give us our fricking telescope back you thief bastards.
The chancellor, before the Civil War, was a man named Barnard. He raised the money to buy the telescope, hence the name "Barnard Observatory" (even though there is no observatory in it). Barnard was from the north and wasn't sympathetic to the Confederacy, so when MS seceded from the union he resigned as chancellor and moved up north. He eventually gave his money to Columbia upon his death, which is why Barnard College is on the Columbia campus.
So Barnard College and Barnard Observatory are named for the SAME person.
Oh, and Barnard was a friend of U.S. Grant's, which is why Grant didn't burn the observatory, chapel (now Croft buildling), and Lyceum down when he paid a visit to Oxford in 1864.
EDIT: Rumor has it that Grant rode his horse through the Lyceum, but I have no idea if that's true (I doubt it).

I have done it, most of my friends have as well. FYI, Faulkner's home, Rowan Oak, located just off south Lamar and the square, is now a museum that houses all of his old stuff and is taken care of by the university. If you come for the football game, I would suggest visiting.
If you're a Faulkner fan then it's a must. You'll get to see his typewriter, some of his original manuscripts, etc.

Ole Miss Delta Zetas got kicked off campus for being a legit brothel in the early '80s from what I've been told

My sophomore year I was in a Liba class about Faulkner and we did a full walk through of the house. The guy even took down those little partitions so we could walk around in each room. Saw his bottle of Jack in the kitchen.

UK DTD was involved in a huge international drug smuggling ring in the 80's. There was a book written about it, The Bluegrass Conspiracy.

You left out the best part.

not going to read thru this entire string so perhaps this has already been mentioned - there is a series of elaborate tunnels under the LSU campus -- when I was a student there in late 70s/early 80s you would periodically go "tunneling". Kind of funny in that someone would be sitting in the Quad and a "tunneler" would poke his head out of a manhole and startle them.
See that your sig pic is Jo Willie, btw is he still "strug - gal - ing"
