For the record, I'm one of those guys who is really affectionate with his male friends. I love being close to my male friends. I used to kiss my best friend on the cheek (although usually drunk) I should have been born Italian, or Greek, or some other homo-Mediterranean culture instead of German.

I probably love my best friends, if I'm being honest, more than I've ever thought I was in love with a woman.

It does not give me wood, though. And neither does Tim Tebow.

I don't even have a slight mancrush on Tebow. I think its because he's too gay for me.

I only get mancrushes on the strong, capable, not-talk-like-a-girl type of guys. Male bodies don't do it for me.

I can admire Tebows physique, but only for a second. Mainly, he just makes me feel like I need to work out more and not look at shirtless dudes, in order to minimize my own personal shame and body dismorphic issues.

We're being totally honest, now, right?

so you really are gay, NJReb?

I didn't say that; I was just making an observation and a true one....

Regardless, I don't believe in this whole "gay/"straight" idea because it is not an accurate reflection of what people are really like in real life......Sexuality comes in 100 shades of gray, not black or white......

Nice post, wmr.

As I said early in the thread, one can admire beauty without it necessarily being the same as sexual attraction.

Just make sure that your lack of sexual attraction to guys is real and not the result of your having internalized the societal taboos.....if that is the case, so be it, but if it is due to the latter, then you should recognize that and deal with it and you will be much better off......

In other cultures, most guys spend almost all of their social time with other guys because they like them better than females, just as you described......and that is what we need to change about this culture, which can only happen, though, if the fear of homosexuality or bisexuality is overcome.......because it is that fear that allows women to call the shots, socially......

Yeah, I gotcha.

Its fear-based stigma. Prior to the 20th century, men were generally more at ease with being close to each other.

Its the rise (or acceptance) of homosexuality that puts fear in straight guys of hugging their buddies. Prior to the 20th century, men didn't worry about being perceived as GAY if the put their arm around their friend, or god forbid, their knees accidentally touched while watching a football game.

In war, and sports, since the "fear" of homosexuality is eradicated (or homosexuality is perceived as not being in those environments), guys revert to being much more affectionate and physical with each other.

These days, we need something to PROVE that we're not gay, before we can connect with each other in a non-sexual way.

I've read the books. I actually am kind of a male equivalent of a feminist. See? There's not even a word for that. Masculinist?

Check out your local bookstore's gender studies section sometime. There are about a dozen shelves dedicated to Feminism, a shelf or two dedicated to Queer issues, and if you're lucky, a book or two about men, if any at all.

Yep. That is why I am getting ready to write one and start a blog, too. When I do, I will let you know about it and you can help me spread the word....

Shameless plug for "Art of Manliness.com"
There's some great stuff on there. Share your blog here when you write it.

Have you done the Mankind Project by any chance? I haven't, but I have friends who have.

Hey guys been gone awhile and I'm back!

quote:

I'll let you in on a little secret. Most straight guys hate gay guys because they are jealous of them, for just that reason.

While they are out partying, having non-committal sex that is easy to come by, and hanging out with cool guys, they are stuck with some whiney, annoying girl who wants them to go shopping with her and do other things they hate doing......and the only reward you get from all this is sex with someone who cannot give head worth a damn and will only have sex of any kind if you act all "romantic" with her!

WTF??? I'm outta here.
