Team of the Decade- Long

Got bored and thought I would rank the SEC teams on their overall performance from 2000-2009. If you disagree with some of these rankings, or just want to call me a dumbass, feel free!
1st Tier
1a Florida: 100 wins. 2 National Titles, 3 SEC titles, 4 trips to Atlanta. 8 AP rankings. 1,1, 3,3,10,12,12,24. Average Rank: 8.375. BCS Record, 4-1. Overall Bowl Record, 5-5.
1b LSU: 99 wins 2 National Titles 3 SEC titles 4 trips to Atlanta. 8 AP rankings. 1,1,3,5,7,16,17,22. Average Rank: 9. BCS record, 4-0. Bowl record, 7-3.
The difference between these two teams is negligible. Florida has one more win, but LSU's winning % is ever so slightly higher. Florida had been to one more BCS game, but LSU has a better bowl record. I went with Florida 1a becuase their average ranking was slightly higher, but I could not argue if you switched them.
2nd Tier
3. Georgia: 98 wins. 2 SEC Titles, 3 Trips to Atlanta, 9 AP rankings, 2,3,7,7,10,13,20,22,23. Average Rank: 11.89. BCS record, 2-1. Bowl Record 8-2.
Georgia has been the most consistent team in the SEC this decade. They have more top 25 appearences than anyone and the best bowl record. Their lack of a national championship, however, keeps them from being on the same tier as Florida and LSU and keeps them is solid third place.
4. Auburn: 88 wins. 1 SEC title, 2 trips to Atlanta. 6 AP rankings: 2,9,14,14,15,18. Average Rank, 12. BCS Record, 1-0. Bowl record, 6-3. (missed one year due to losing record.)
Auburn spent most of the decade firmly in the 4 spot. Other than two seasons, 04 and 06, they really couldn't be said to be any better than this spot. They only had one losing season, but only had two 10 win seasons (though grnted, one was a doozy) still, they were a consistent 8-9 win team and that consistency keeps them at #4 for me despite a late charge by Alabama.
5. Alabama: 79 wins. 1 National Title, 1 SEC title. 2 trips to Atlanta. 4 AP finishes 1,6,8,11. Average Rank, 6.5. 1-1 BCS. 4-3 in bowls (missed one year on probation, 2 to losing seasons).
Alabama started the decade at #3 in Los Angeles and finished the decade in Los Angeles at #1, but what a roller coaster in between. They had 4 ten win seasons and three top ten finishes, but they also had two losing seasons. A late charge almost got Bama to the number 4 spot, but not quite (and had Alabama's 99 season come one year later they would have passed Auburn). However, it did not and Auburn still had two more top 25 finishes and one less losing season than Alabama, which means they deserve the 4th spot.
3rd tier
6. Tennessee: 83 wins. 3 trips to Atlanta, 5 AP finishes, 4,12,13,15,25. Average Rank, 13.8. Bowl record, 3-5. (Missed two due to losing records).
Tennessee, like Alabama, started the deacede near the top. Then, they stumbled, though not nearly as fast as Alabama (who managed to blow their lofty ranking in the first game of the decade). Like Alabama, Tennessee has been wildly inconsistent. Good at times, and abysmal at times. 3 trips to Atlanta 5 AP rankings is enough to put them at the top of the third tier, but without an SEC title this decade they cannot be in the second tier.
7a. Arkansas. 71 wins. 2 Trips to Atlanta. 1 Finish in the AP, 15. Bowl Record, 2-5 (missed
3 years due to losing records)
7b. South Carolina. 68 wins, 2 AP appearances, 13, 19. Average Rank, 16. Bowl Record, 3-3. Missed bowls 2 years due to losing records, once due to being passed over in favor of Alabama, and declined one appearance to to a brawl with Clemson.
7c. Ole Miss. 63 wins. 3 AP rankings, 20, 14, 13. Average Rank, 15.67. Missed bowls five years due to losing records.
-It was kinda hard ranking these teams. In the end, I went with Arkansas becuase they had 2 trips to Atlanta, though one trip was becuase Alabama was on probation. I hesitated, however, becuase they only finished ranked in the AP one time and had an abysmal bowl record.
-South Carolina went next becuase they had more bowls and wins than Ole Miss (and probably should have had two more than they did for reasons listed above). I ranked them below Arkansas becuase, although SC had a better bowl record and two AP finishes vs. 1, they also had fewer wins and, even had Alabama gone to Atlanta in 03, Arkansas would still have been to Atlanta once vs. 0 for Arkansas. O
-Ole Miss had the best bowl record of these three teams, as well as three yop 25 appearances, whcih is the same amount as the other two combined. However, they also had mor losing seasons and fewer wins, so I ranked third out of three, but man was it close!
4th Tier.
10. Kentucky- 40 wins. 3-1 in bowls. Missed 6 due to losing seasons.
Kentucky started off the decade as, well, Kentucky, but then reeled off 4 straight winning seasons, 4 bowl appearances and three bowl wins. That's a level of consistency Kentucky has not seen since Bear Bryant roamed their sidelines. Brooks was a great coach for them.
11. Mississippi State. 42 wins, 2-0 in bowls.
What can you say about Mississippi State this decade? They can be glad for 2 reasons. 1) for 8 of your wins, becuase that and an independence bowl is what seperated Mississippi State from Vandy. 2) There's nowhere for you to go but up!
12. Vandy. 34 wins. 1-0 in bowls.
Hey, Vandy won a bowl, which means every team in the conference got a bowl win this decade!
1st Tier

LSU and UF were so damn similar
ETA: I'd put Bama over UGA because of the NC, but not above Auburn.

id give uf the edge bc of head to head. its damn close. 6-4 uf. we had a chance to tie it up but les and gary gave that shite away.
its really close though considering the most important stat national titles and sec titles is dead locked

You could argue either one and be right.

That's just one a many factor's that went ever so slightly one way or the other. It was damn close!

it gets really tough with uga, auburn and bama. bama does have the legit nc, auburn should have one so i think it might be enough to cover the 10 game gap bt auburn and uga. its close though and all depends how you want to weight each stat.

IMO, this is how the factors should be weighted:
NCs
SECCs
BCS record
BCS appearances
Games won
Avg. AP final rankings
NCs
SECCs
BCS record
BCS appearances
Games won
Avg. AP final rankings

even weighted like that its close
we have the better bcs record, they have 1 more bcs game, 1 more win.
stunning how close it is

I don't think its all that close between Georgia and Auburn. Georgia has been far more consistent, had beeter finsihes, won the SEC more, and never had a losing record (plus they finished ranked every year of the decade until this last one! thats more than LSU and Florida did!) I was surprised how close Alabama and Auuburn were. Who'd have thought three years ago that we would finish the decade within three wins of eachother?

Thats hard to compare, with some teams. For example, Alabama had a much higher Average than Auburn, but they also has two less rankings.
BTW, while Florida did win one more game, LSU's winning % was actually ever so slightly higher.

yea uga auburn i agree with bc they dont have the legit claim of a title. i think bamas nc is the equalizer for those 3 but i put alot of stock in getting the nc
Posted on 4/14/10 at 6:24 pm to ayoforyayo
Same here. That's why, IMO, Bama would jump UGA who could never get there. I give Auburn credit for the undefeated season, which would keep them ahead of Bama.

we won 2 bowl games this decade. 2000 independence bowl

And that's why I posted. Some people think other factors matter more and I enjoy discussions on things like that. I can't believe I'm going to admit this, but another reason I would have a hard time putting Bama ahead of Auburn based on the NC was becuase I think Auburn got screwed. I don't care to discuss in this thread about who would have won the game, but I don't think anyone will deny Auburn deserved their chance.

auburn should have played for one no doubt, but we don't know for sure if they would have won it. auburn should probably still be ranked ahead of Bama this decade because they have been alot more consistent

i agree with that. so many ways you can cut the stats and weight them with those middle teams and each way produces a different team to be 3.
good thread though since it has stats and facts and actual discussion instead of flames

And that's why I did. They had three more wins, 2 more top 25 finishes, and one less losing season. But damn did we make it close in the end! (who'd have thought that right after we fired Shula?)
I was also very surprised at how close Ole Miss, South Carolina and Arkansas were. They all had arguments why one should be ahead of the other!

And that's why I posted this. I was getting tired of every thread either being a flame, or devolving into one. I thought if I posted rankings with stats, we could discuss things like the weight each factor should have like you were saying earlier.

How did you come up with these? I could only go by Top 25 finishes, where did you find rankings beyond top 25?
